ParticipantA reminder or prompt, Scott to please consider a poll as was mentioned earlier:
1)Intending to move
2)Living here part-time
3)Living here full time
4)Have not yet visited Costa Rica
5)Live here but want to leave
6)Lived here but have now left.Possibly it is not in the interest of this website to have an actual answer to the question?
I just heard of two more couples returning to the USA today.

ParticipantDogs are not permitted on buses so this may cause problems if you intend to use public transport, and if you are staying in one particular area, a known taxi driver may allow one in their cab.

ParticipantYou may find your ‘food items’ at some of the more expensive supermarkets either in the SJ, Escazu or some larger beach towns but don’t don’t presume them to be here.
You would be better of in town than in the beach areas, though. BTW PriceSmart is like ‘Cosco but from the beach areas, it is about 3-4 hours away depending on which beach of course..
Again, nothing like the variety you would get ‘back home’ Problem is, you can possibly get it one day, and then not see it again for months.costaricafinca
Participantpebo1 this is the way it is done here, with the price for inside and patios the same.

Participantsunshine9557 life here is very far removed from the ‘normal’ Canadian lifestyle. We are Canadian, and I had a preschool/daycare for over 25 years, so I know a little of your possible routine. There are a day care centers here, but nothing like you probably have have experienced before. Unless you are in the bigger cities or where many expats live, there will not be English speaking workers. This link, Preschool info was added recently, and is more the North American style. The author is expecting a baby soon, and I am sure she can provide more information regarding life in her area, and possible rental accommodations. Again schools, unless private, will not offer the education you want for your family, and it is not cheap but they are, few and far between.
You will not find jobs easily unless service oriented, and there are many looking for these positions.
FYI new rules go into effect, regarding legal residency here, on the 1st March.
We live in the interior of Guanacaste, and life is slow…costaricafinca
ParticipantA preschool teacher may find it harder to find work, than a teacher of elementary-high school.
Midwifery is not common, here as locals get free birthing at the CAJA hospitals and most ex-pats use the private hospitals.
*As an added note, I knew an American woman who is a doula and she had to obtain additional certification here and be fully bilingual before she could practice. She delivered, maybe, 1 child per year over the 3 years I knew her.costaricafinca
ParticipantOne of the worse noise issues is WIND 🙄
and of course it isn’t year round, thank goodness. For someone like myself, the WIND really disturbs my sleep.
Good point is, it dries laundry fast…if you can get in on the line!costaricafinca
ParticipantN&M’s,in San Pedro, on the main road out of SJ sells them, too.

ParticipantRonny, yes, a membership is necessary for PriceSmart. Obviously, if you intend to ’bolt this to the floor' it will be in your own home and not a rental property 🙄

Participantjdocop thanks for your input. We have had no problems with gas stoves and eventually found 4 larger tanks for sale, privately, which are also used for a hot water tank. The dryer is for friends who are building a few houses and would prefer gas, but we understand the safety concerns.

ParticipantI understand where you mean, but back to my question, do you know where to purchase a gas dryer?
Anyone else have information, please?costaricafinca
Participantwaggoner41 we have lived in Costa Rica for 9 years and understand how a ‘Tico face’ can lower the price. The problem is not the price but finding a gas dryer. And we have many Tico friends who we trust.
costaricafinca
ParticipantNo, we are not, but will be ‘in town’ from 1-6 Feb. and will be pricing /choosing appliances.
costaricafinca
Participantwaggoner41 did you bring your gas dryer with you or did you purchase it here. If here, can you please post where one can be purchased.
Or anyone else, if you have the information.costaricafinca
ParticipantYou would do best by coming for an extended vacation and driving around to the areas you think would be of interest to you. George, does, I gather take you around to some established homes and builders.
The highway will soon be operational.
One poster has said although being involved in ’Green building initiatives' etc, there are locals involved in this too, so this does not apply.
Be aware, that the residency requirements will change on March 1st, 2010 -
