My wife and I are arriving in San Jose mid-day wednesday. We are then driving to a B&B about 30 minutes south of Dominical. Does anyone know if we are going to have problems getting to our destination?

“I just left a meeting with Ana Orosco, Mayor of Quepos and Dr. Alejandra Quesada of the Health Department concerning the imminent danger of a mountain collapse onto the main road leading from Quepos to Manuel Antonio. The subject area stretches from the new Tutu Bar to Mimo’s Hotel and everything on both sides of the road.

Owners are advised to close their businesses and vacate their premises until a geologist gives a report of what needs to be done to resolve this danger. The populated areas below this mountain are in grave danger of massive land slides.

Please prepare for the eventuality of Manuel Antonio being inaccessible until solutions can be found to do the necessary repairs to the Main Road and be ready to contribute to the repair of the “Old Manuel Antonio Access Road” in a major way.

Without say, the imminent danger on the eve of our Highs Season threatens the entire area of Manuel Antonio if swift action is not undertaken. We need your full cooperation as we stay focused on what to do next.

I suggest you act quickly on establishing Plan B and Plan C. If you’ve never been to Costa Rica or the southern pacific zone, from what I’m reading you may be out of luck. If you’re driving I don’t even want to think about what the road conditions are between Quepos and Dominical, unless they’ve finally paved it.

According to La Nacion , this morning, all roads to that area are closed. Agree on the Plan b and Plan C…
Just spoke with a friend inland of Quepos, who regularly monitors the rainfall, and he said they had, as of this morning, 48.5 inches since Tuesday….

I’m assuming that you mean Ojochal. There are several slides and washouts on the costanera making the journey impossible. Supplies are running low in town and people are stranded in the more elevated areas.

The photo shows Playa pinuela 7 km south of Uvita…

Thanks everyone for your great information. We have decided to delay our trip by three weeks.

I just received this e-mail from Ojochal seguridad…

Between Uvita and Ojochal, the Pinuela wash-out that took out a section the width of the Costenara will take is a big job to repair. The equal or greater issue is the slide that occured 1 mile further South where a section of the hill from the ocean side collapsed and has covered the road. It looks big but having walked it, it is much bigger: 50 meters across, 3 or 4 meters high and the real issue, approximately 150 meters in length. For you footballers, a distance of 1 and 1/2 football fields. The further insult is that the slide was not exactly at the top of the hill so in addition there is currently a 100 meter lake between the slide and the peak of the hill. The only good news is that there was a bus caught between the wash-out and the slide that, until it runs out of gas, it is shuttling people between the wash-out and the slide so people can hitch a ride from either end. I predict one week minimum before vehicles can get through, but if we start a betting pool and with all the other problems I would bet on two.
