yep, that’s the law. you cannot wipe tables, or sweep the floor, or wash glasses. you must hire a Tico to do those jobs. you can stand around and watch him work.

after you’ve lived here for SEVEN years as a LEGAL resident. to become a legal resident takes about two years from start to finish, so in about ten years, you could entertain the thought of becoming a national provided you are fluent in spanish, know the history of costa rica, and can sing the national anthem. in the end it’s just easier to boss your employees around and not do any work.

as a person that has 10 years experience of operating retail business here.

which included a bar and various internet cafes and bed and breakfast etc

all i can say is this

the quickest way to lose your passion about living in this country is to actually plug into the local economy and corruption.

this country is broken that is all there is to it and the only way to make things move forward is continually breaking the laws so you find yourself in a position where you become a criminal by way of default.

so if you want to HATE costa rica

go and open up a small business here..:D

instead of opening a brick and mortar business go online.. as i am now doing

quite successfully I may add ๐Ÿ˜€

and the best part of this is that no one knows what I do for a living and i mingle amoungst the locals buying fresh produce at the local feria.

no inspectors

no tax people

no muni police

no immigration

no local rats coming out of the woodwork to extract money..

look at scott oliver

and how he makes his living.

he lives high up in a penthouse.. behind his computer all day in his underwear :shock::shock::shock::shock:

sometimes I even bet he takes a few days without showering :D:D:D:D

now life is pura vida

there are many ways of monetizing revenue online. its just a matter of researching one that interests you.

you will have to invest some time and do your own diligence to find something that floats your boat

point is there is no reason why anyone should ever NOT do online business.

internet here is getting better and better. so all you need is a high speed connection and create your virtual office.

set up a aerocasillas address for your U.S. presence and get to work

make sure you keep all your monies in the U.S. and just make sure you keep only enough for 3 months living expenses at a time.

then you can walk around and buy frsh fruits and veggies and mingle with the locals and sing pura vida all of the time

it’s a mail forwarding service that gives you an address in florida and then they bring your mail here. but they are EXPENSIVE — $1.50 per letter, but if you buy anything online and have it shipped to them to bring in, you will pay dearly for the shipping, customs duties, and a long list of other stupid fees they tack on. a couple of weeks ago, i ordered a $5.00 item. it weighed only a few ounces. by the time Aerocasillas got done with me, i paid $9.45 in transports and duties. not having learned my lesson still, i bought a sweater on ebay — cost $20 — import fees $18. stupid still, i had to have a new watchband which i also got on ebay for a good price and had the shipper not include an invoice so i just told aerocasillas i paid $10 for it, but it cost me $14 for customs and shipping. a rubber watchband, no less. now i feel completely soaked so if i can’t get what i need in this country, or have someone mule it in, i will do without!! and i’ve discovered that the USPS will forward your mails to costa rica, which is what i am doing now instead of paying $1.50 a letter! it takes two weeks for stuff to get here, tho.

Yikes!!!:shock::(

I am all for supporting local artisans,growers,etc,etc-but at times, one may want or need something no readily available and a drive distances may nto be option, internet would be better. There may be some things CR simply does not have or , very pricey one may want…..

The actual time to wait to apply for Naturalization based on Residency is about eleven years. Three years in a Temporary Residency Category followed by seven years in the Permanent Residency Category, and a year between the two to change the Categories of Residency. The Naturalization process takes about a year and a half to complete following the Application in the Naturalization Section of the Civil Registry.

If you are married to a Costa Rican for two years and show that you are primarily resident in Costa Rica for those two years of marriage, you qualify to apply to be Naturalized without ever having had Residency, subject to a successful Interpol Search and other basic documentation being supplied.

I made a few mistakes many times with bringing stuff in. so I understand completely. :D:D

no here is the way to use aerocasillas.. or jetbox etc

just use them to get you a valid physical miami presence you will use this address for business. this way you can open up a bank account and have them use this address BUT disable the snail mail feature and have your statements delivered electronically.

by the way.. set up an LLC in the states with a business name. you might as well enjoy the same corporate perks as the big guys do.

then buy a magic jack plus.. and get a miami phone number so you can set up a paypal business account. this way you have a way to get paid for your services.

then you get a paypal business debit card this way you can actually spend the money your new business generates. with the paypal debit its actually a mastercard so you can use this as a mastercard at any ATM if you need cash or just use it to pay for goods and services.

then get a high speed connection.. SUPER IMPORTANT I would suggest at least 3 to 4 meg download and 768 upload. the internet high speed connection is your focal point. so you cannot skimp here as everything you do will be predicated on a good connection. the money you save with dropping amnet cable or cabletica TV will help you with this.

then use a proxy service and use Miami so that when you surf the web it looks like your surfing from a miami physical address.

a nice perk is that you can watch all the online services.

hulu.com
amazon on demand
crackle.com
cbs.com

etc etc

I don’t pay for cable which would have cost me 18000 colones.. now I get to watch what I want when I want with no or limited commercial interruption. I hate watching cable here as commercials overwhelm the content.

so now you have a virtual business infrastructure where you can start an online business and no one will ever know you are in costa rica. ๐Ÿ˜€

you can go out and make money and all the while you can manage this little empire from your laptop.

you can speak with clients on the phone and they think your office is in miami florida..

you can operate totally online and make $5000- $50,000 a month and up the sky is the limit..

just do some dilligence and look at your passions and find something that you will enjoy doing and it will not seem like work. ๐Ÿ˜€

now you just need to do it

here is one of my favorite speeches of all time

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2uFH0NCMY4

hope this helps someone

stevie

PS. btw.. this is what we need in america today.. people that can just do it.. no more talk
