In this most recent opt-ed piece, Costa Rica is not even mentioned, even though in the ’90 and early Y2K, CR was the hotbed for expats. CR is heading down a the wrong path for retirees, tourism and foreign capital. The proposed Tax Bill is but a mear example of lack of auterity, over burden government [10,000 recent hired Caja workes] and indifference to both security and their cash cow “foreign money”. My prediction: unemployment will hit 9%, Laura will be out next election, and this country will dredge thru a recession for the next 2-4 yrs. [Sounds familiar?] But intypical tico style..”mae tranquilo”..ven toma una birra..

You’re right! Costa Rica is not mentioned in this piece but it wasn’t so long ago that the AARP ranked the Central Valley area and Atenas as “one of the best places to retire abroad” so thanks for your opinion but, their opinion is clearly different than yours.
We’ve seen many “proposals” in the past that never became a reality. We’ve also heard many BS stories e.g. Remember when people were saying that the government was going to require $5,000 per month income from retirees?
Most countries are unfortunately “heading down the wrong path” but at the end of the day, very few of these proposals would dramatically affect gringo pensionados in Costa Rica anyway and…
Why do you think that article doesn’t mention the fact that it’s Costa Rica that’s the safest country in Central America and not Panama?

I imagine that those of us living here will suffer through it. By the time they figure out what they are going to do about taxes Laura will be long gone and we will all probably be six feet under.:lol:

Is it not interesting that, out of one side of our collective mouths, many of us bemoan the quality of care rendered by the CAJA and out of the other side we bitch about them hiring more caretakers? We want it both ways: better care and lower taxes to pay for it. Uh huh . . .
And, by the way, La Presidente cannot succeed herself under the Costa Rican constitution, so we’re all safe.
