The forecast is for the rainy season to begin in a few weeks, are you ready? There are things we do to prepare…

[custom_script adID=149]

  1. First, stock up on umbrellas. For some reason, we go through (ie. lose) a lot of umbrellas during the rainy season. Some years, we have found them at Pequeño Mundo for an excellent price. Other years, we pick them up as we find them, priced right. I leave them in my car, at front and back doors, in the garage, etc.
  2. Second, clean your gutters! Getting the gutters cleaned out before the deluge hits is much more pleasant. Even when there are no large trees around, gutters can fill up with wind blown leaves, etc.
  3. Third, we have put a fresh coat of oil on all of our outdoor furniture. The rainy season really takes a toll on our teak patio furniture, so we put a coat now and another when there is a break in July.
  4. Fourth, I think of any areas that I want to plant, in the garden. I like to get new plants in the ground at the beginning of rainy season, so they have time to get well established before the dry season.
  5. [custom_script adID=151]

  6. Fifth, consider any areas of your property that have erosion issues. Now is the time to get some plant materials to make sure the erosion does not get worse. We put vetiver grass in some steep areas of our property. It has worked wonderfully and looks good. There are many options to hold your precious soil in place.
  7. Sixth, plan a trip to areas that tend to have flooding issues during the rainy season now. There are places I just don’t like to go, during the heavy rains. I enjoy seeing these areas before it becomes difficult and possibly dangerous.
  8. Seventh, check your car tires and make sure they are in good condition. There is nothing worse than driving on a road that suddenly becomes a rushing, muddy river and having bald tires. Now is a great time to change tires that have too much wear.
  9. Eighth, the beginning of the rainy season is a good time to prune your trees. They don’t like to be pruned during the dry season as they want to put out new leaves and need more water do accomplish that. Pruning in the next month helps your property not stay as wet, with water pooling under heavily laden trees.

Please stay safe and enjoy the glorious rainfall.
