This week Costa Rica struck a major blow against two organized crime syndicates, one being significantly more dangerous than the other…

1. Fourteen people linked to the extremely violent Mexican Michoacana crime family have been arrested. This is the group which is famous for torturing its enemies as part of their “divine justice” ritual.

Drug demand is fairly limited within Costa Rica but, drug runners bring up their deadly cargo by boat to the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Costa Rica where it’s picked up, then normally taken by land north through Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and finally to arrive in the world’s most lucrative market with the “highest level of illegal drug use in the world,” the USA.

In raiding 12 buildings the police were able to seize 250 kilos of cocaine, 476 kilos of compressed marijuana as well as heroin.

2. In the second case, 100 Costa Rica police officers arrested 14 members of Los Gallos (The Cockerels) car theft and extortion gang. 11 other members of this gang were arrested in December 2008 and thankfully, car thefts have declined dramatically since.

It might be too early to say but it would appear that our new President Laura Chinchilla is very serious indeed about her promise to fight crime in Costa Rica…

Meanwhile, back in the USA have you seen how more than 35 major disaster drills have taken place over the last few weeks?

Unfortunately – but not unexpectedly – none of them had anything to do with the real disaster in the Gulf which is being managed even more pathetically than New Orleans which is hard to believe, but it would appear that the ‘powers that be’ are expecting another “surprise” of some kind in the near future, don’t you think?

Are you ready?

“If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face–forever.” (*)

Based on their staggeringly abysmal track record, are you really willing to let your government – any government – protect you and your loved ones?

Or, would it be sensible to have a plan ‘B’?

Perhaps a little home in Costa Rica – which doesn’t have an army, or a navy or an air force and couldn’t enforce a Martial Law if we had one – where you could escape to… A comfortable condo near the beach in Jaco? Or, a small apartment in the Central Valley where you can relax before they declare Martial Law in the USA, Canada and the UK.

“The ideal set up by the Party was something huge, terrible, and glittering–a world of steel and concrete, of monstrous machines and terrifying weapons–a nation of warriors and fanatics, marching forward in perfect unity, all thinking the same thoughts and shouting the same slogans, perpetually working, fighting, triumphing, persecuting–three hundred million people all with
the same face.” (*)

Many of you will say this will not happen but you have to admit that its more likely than ever that it ‘could’ happen and, if it does, are you prepared?
