According to a recent 2009 Home Survey conducted by the National Statistics and Census Institute (Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos (INEC)), employees in the financial sector earn about 90% more than the rest of the employees in Costa Rica.

The average monthly salary for the 46,000 workers in the financial sector – banks, insurance companies, pension fund companies and all companies that capture and lend money – in July 2009 was c609,408 colones (about US$1,072 per month) which is 1.9 times the average worker’s salary of c322,320 (about US$567 per month).

At 2.5% of the Costa Rican workforce, the financial sector is a small sector, but a well paid one by Costa Rican standards.
