They say a picture paints a thousands words and in looking at these photographs probably the first question that popped into my mind was:

Where in the world can the President of a country calmly pose
for photographs – without fear – with construction workers
and the general public?

In her inauguration speech ‘Costa Rica, nuestro hogar común’ which you can read in Spanish here, Presidenta Laura Chinchilla spoke of plans to make Costa Rica safer, more peaceful, with stronger police presence, more educated people, better prepared, healthier, with better housing, improved care for children, our senior citizens and a promise to continue the fight against poverty.

She also referred to her commitment to small and medium sized businesses, more productive and better paid employees, continued respect for the environment and additional green energy initiatives, more innovation, with new economy initiatives with biotechnology, organic agriculture, the audiovisual industry, more focus on “infocommunications” and the aerospace industry.

“A Costa Rica where knowledge and technological development have as its ultimate goal the dignity of man.”

“We will work for a Costa Rica capable of maintaining it’s moral leadership in the world thanks to the defense of peace, liberty and human rights, projecting with more strength our determination to fight for the sustainability of our planet…”

Refreshingly absent from the President of Costa Rica’s inauguration speech was any reference to the “global war on terror” and the bankrupt global financial system brought about by Wall Street’s banksters.

You don’t hear too many people talking of peace these days, but what a breath of fresh air it is to live in a country – Costa Rica – a land of stunning scenery, sunshine and smiles, with no army, no navy, no air force, where the President, her people and a few of us expats can enjoy a level of freedom that no longer exists “back home”.

Costa Rica has no weapons of mass destruction however, Costa Rica will happily offer you their weapons of mass compassion:

  • Real peace.
  • True freedom and…
  • The dignity of man.

Whether President Laura Chinchilla is able to achieve what she wants within a very complicated legal and political system remains to be seen, but the love she has for her country, the respect she has for the people of Costa Rica and the genuine sincerity of the woman and her smile simply cannot be questioned.

Our thanks to our friends at La Nación – Costa Rica’s largest Spanish circulation newspaper for their permission to include some of their their photographs.
