Miramar, literally translates to English as: ‘Ocean View.’

The tiny town of Miramar is located in the hills overlooking the Sierpe River Basin, Pacific Ocean and Mountain ranges of South West Costa Rica. On the Northern border of the famed Osa Peninsula in this wild, remote and beautiful corner of Costa Rica.

To get to Miramar one needs to be a bit of an adventurer. While it is on the main road running from Sierpe to Sabalo over to San Juan and eventually to the famed “Drake Bay”, the road is currently only accessible to horses, foot traffic and perhaps an adventurous all terrain vehicle.

After riding horses an hour to get there and looking for an ice cold beverage you will be happy to get just a room temperature Coke or Fresca. The tiny grocery store in Miramar has no refrigeration and carries only the most basic necessities.

The store owner who lives in the same building is friendly and seems to like to have company. No check out lanes for 10 or less items, just wooden benches where you can relax drink your soda and give your horse a break.

The entire town consists of the grocery store, a school and a church. Another town where the churches out number the bars. The town sits on a ridge that runs parallel to the Sierpe River and down the center of the Osa peninsula.

The views in any direction can be stunning and some are “over the top”. There are properties with views that encompass the ocean, the river valley and two separate mountain ranges.

There are many springs that are the beginnings of crystal clear streams that run down the hillsides becoming small rivers by the time they reach the Grand Sierpe River.

If you are looking for an area that is virtually ‘undiscovered,’ this is it. The roads have kept all but a very few very adventurous foreigners away keeping prices comparatively low.

Take road access, electricity and beach out of the equation and interest drops like a lead ball however, add the words foresight and educated speculation to the equation and you have great value.

Plans for the repair of the road are in black and white and are actually in process. I have personally driven very near Miramar on my motorcycle and didn’t travel anywhere a 4×4 could not have made it. The repairs are scheduled for this dry season, currently underway. When the road is in this virtually unknown area may see a boom as many will discover the remote splendor of this little piece of paradise.
