“My real estate career started over 16 years ago in Tampa, Florida. I purchased my first house, a 1923 bungalow, in Old Seminole Heights, a neighborhood just a few miles north of downtown. I took my time and restored the house and then held onto it as a rental property.

That was the beginning of a passion for restoration work that I still have to this day. My last big project in Tampa was the restoration of a 1926 Arts and Crafts style church. At some point in the 1980s, the beautiful structure had been half heartedly converted into a home.

As soon as I walked in through those double front doors and saw the soaring, 20 foot high ceilings made of tongue and groove wood with scissor trusses, original maple wood floors (a rarity in Florida), and the huge 36″ x 80″ double hung windows, I knew I had to have it.

During the restoration job I completed on the church/home, the project drew so much attention that I made the front page of the local newspaper, The Tampa Tribune. It was an incredible experience!

I feel that expertise in real estate is a talent that has been passed down in our family. My training and education in real estate started at a young age. My uncle Glenn has always dabbled in real estate as a hobby and for investment purposes and his efforts have had a strong influence on me. Through the years, he has purchased many rental homes and used a “buy and hold” strategy for long term investing. He has been very successful in this arena.

Just a little further back in my family tree, my great grandfather, Glenn Murphy (whom my uncle was named for), was a smart man, especially with regard to business and investing. He was a trader of all sorts. As a young man he sold cord wood. Later, he owned a grocery store that was situated on a large commercial parcel of land that, at the time, did not seem to be of much value.

However, my great grandfather knew better and today, this land is located on one of the major thoroughfares of Tampa.

Furthermore, he was very clever in business, while still being fair. One example that comes to mind was the time that someone owed him some money and they could not pay him back in cash. Well, to my great grandfather (referred to affectionately by his customers and friends as “Mr. Glenn”), that was okay because he would just accept land in trade for their debts.

In fact, on one particular “trade”, he acquired 14 beachfront lots on Holmes Beach, Florida – directly on the Gulf of Mexico! Not only were these lots located on the Gulf, but they were bordered in the back by the intercostal waterway. At that time, beachfront property was not really worth a lot, but in time they grew to be incredibly valuable. Ultimately, my grandfather had great business instincts, particularly in real estate.

The influence of these two savvy men, along with the love and support of an amazing family (especially my mother and my grandmothers) have motivated, inspired and instilled in me the belief that I could do anything in this life that I wanted to do. My great grandmother used to tell me, “It is all within you Dennis, you just have to put your mind to it!”

I had long had dreams of living in another country. Traveling has alway been my passion and my vice of choice. Traveling is not only how I recharge my batteries, but from where I draw the most inspiration.

On one of my sojourns eight years ago, my travels brought me to Costa Rica. Our family members all longed for a beach house like the one back in the day on Holmes beach in Florida. We decided to check out the real estate options in the beach areas of Costa Rica while we were there.

In Costa Rica, we definitely loved the beaches, but were ultimately captivated by the beautiful mountains of the Central Valley and the refreshing climate that these mountains offered. We were especially drawn to the little village of Atenas, known to have “el mejor clima del mundo” or “the best climate in the world”.

We were so taken by the mountains, that within six months we purchased our own mountain home in a charming town called Atenas – the crown jewel of the Central Valley. Once we made the decision, I was confident that is where I wanted to be. Atenas felt like “home”!

Once we moved to Atenas, Gerardo and I set up our full service real estate company. It was important to us to provide quality service to those coming from other countries who were not familiar with how things worked in Costa Rica.

I have been a licensed Realtor in Florida for many years and, even though licensing does not yet exist in Costa Rica, we are members of the Association of Realtors in Costa Rica and we have completed their coursework, which is very similar to real estate courses in the United States.

There are many potential pitfalls that exist in buying real estate, especially in a foreign country. It is important that you, the buyer, be educated when it comes to making a purchase and that the professional you are working with has experience and knowledge to guide you in the right direction.

In addition to extensive experience in real estate sales, restorations, and rentals, both in Costa Rica and the United States, I have an equal amount of experience as a property manager, having managed my family’s extensive portfolio of rental properties. This experience has served me and my clients very well over the years.

I am now living my dreams in Costa Rica and our business is the business of my dreams. It is a great honor to help others in a professional manner. We take it a step further by infusing a great amount of love and that “personal” touch in order to help others realize their dreams of owning a home or property in one of the most beautiful places on earth – Atenas, Costa Rica.

Life is short and precious. I cannot imagine a more beautiful, safe, and healthy place to live and retire to than Atenas.
