Tierra Pacifica is in the middle of the best surf breaks in Costa Rica with world class surf locations just a short drive north or south.

Some of the beaches and other recreation areas you may want to investigate and enjoy are:

  • Playa Lagartillo
  • Playa Avellanas
  • Playa Negra
  • Playa Blanca
  • Playa Arbolito
  • Playa Lagarto
  • Callejones
  • Vanado
  • La Florida
  • Los Pargos

Playa Junquillal, a short walk from your home at Tierra Pacifica, has been enjoyed by the locals for decades before being recently discovered by discerning surfers. The salt and pepper beach of black and white sand is rarely crowded; the powerful waves and currents are not ideal for swimming but you’ll find there are tidal pools perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

It takes just two minutes to paddle out to decent waves and it is appropriate for intermediate to expert skill levels. During the high tides you’ll find peaks with fast rights and lefts; the waves rise up off the sand bar abruptly to offer a challenging but exciting drop in with breaks close to the shore.

The left works on big swells and is great for those who prefer big waves. Junquillal is remote and although the surfing is great, not many people travel there, preferring the hotel resorts further along the coast. Watch for sting rays, which normally run from humans but if you step on one you can get stung. At low tide you can paddle far out and see a view few people imagine that far from shore than ride a wave back in.

If you want to see other locales there are several other beaches you can visit within a 30 minute drive or less on a newly paved road. Las Brisas is close, for example, another right hand reef with a right swell that will have your heart pounding. There aren’t many people here so you can enjoy the waves without the noise pollution of crowds.

Marbella, about an hour away, is for all skill levels. You can ride light, fun waves or barrel through the occasional outside break that forms a huge wave.

If you want to hang with other surfers from all over the world you can go to Playa Negra, a spot popular enough to sustain a parking lot and a restaurant. The waves are world class with plenty of classic tubes shaped in a right-hand break. The waves ultimately come to rest on a volcanic rock reef. If you’re a beginner you’ll want to hit the waves to the right at Sandy Beach. This surf spot is crowded but you can hoist a few with people of like minds and hear all about where they’ve been and the fantastic waves they’ve ridden.

A little further north is Avellanas, a beach you can take the whole family to since it has abundant amenities. There is parking, a restaurant, a Marriott nearby and beautiful white sand stretching for miles. This is for intermediate to expert, best at low tide but good waves can break at any time of day.

You don’t have to be a surfer, however to love living at Tierra Pacifica. The ocean offers abundant fishing, beautiful places to snorkel, and outstanding shell collecting. You can enjoy a day at the beach then walk or take a short drive back to your beautiful home.
