One of the reasons the local telecommunications company ICE has been trying to increase their prices is because Costa Ricans pay the least for their cellphone service than any other country in Central and Latin America.

While Ticos (the Costa Rican people) pay on average ¢30 colones per minute (about US$0.05) other countries can pay more than six times as much…

Colombia has the next most affordable cellphone service at ¢30 colones per minute, that same call in Venezuela would cost you ¢94, in Honduras ¢200 and in Nicaragua ¢143

For example on Costa Rica a ten minute cell phone call would cast about 300 colones, in Nicaragua that same call would cost the equivalent of 1,400 colones – over four times as much.

At ¢1.5 text messages are also the cheapest in Costa Rica, in Honduras and Nicaragua the charge would be ¢28.
