Well, one of my worst nightmares has come to life. Disclosure–the kids are fine, no one was stung–but I’ve seen my first living, angry, poisonous scorpion… and it was not only in my home, but in my baby’s room!

I was just putting my sweet baby girl down for the night, and as she drifted off in my arms, my son cracked open the door (as he often does). The stream of light produced by the open door revealed a crawling critter, where my bare feet were moments away from tip toeing across.

While I assumed it was the average house guest–a large ant or a millipede, I flicked on the light just to be sure. Once I saw the creature in the full illumination, there was no mistaking what was circling the area between my three year old’s toes and mine–a small black scorpion.

My husband heard my “HONEY!”–that call that always makes him come running, when he can tell something is truly wrong. He rushed to get a knife to cut the poisonous tail off, and then killed the unwelcome guest.

Not cool. Not cool at all. In my baby’s room? We did a real search of the room and adjacent bathroom and we think the scorpion entered through the gaping space around the sink piping. Our landlord will be receiving an early call tomorrow, so that can get sealed pronto.

I have heard from some people that these scorpions can kill a large dog, while others claim that they are notdeadly. Between my insect-handing son and my grabby, hungry nine month old, having a scorpion alone with either one of them would not end well. I am so thankful that a trip to the hospital was avoided tonight, but fearful that this won’t be the last time we meet a scorpion in Costa Rica.

I did not manage to catch a picture of the little one who was sharing a room with our children–for who knows how long–but here’s a dead one we found in our last home in Atenas:

Written by Emily Shea of TravelMother.com. “When my husband and I decided to become parents, we strongly agreed that having children would NOT slow us down! We would continue to feed our huger for traveling, participate in outdoor explorations, and maintain our individual hobbies and lifestyle with the babies in tow, or more likely, in the carrier.”
