¡Arte Viva ’06! Festival of Music, Arts and Gastronomy – Providing Continuing Education in Puerto Viejo of Talamanca.

Proposal:

Everything began as a diversion, a dream; all these musicians, artists, chefs saying they would be delighted to share their experience and knowledge with our young people, free of charge . . .

A concept simple and extraordinary at the same time, an idea, full of emotion but also practical and concrete, is about to take place in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, an event whose potential socio-cultural impact would set an example on both a local and national level!

Musicians, artists and local chefs are set to launch an impressive undertaking: dozens of free workshops in diverse areas such as painting, dance, instrumental lessons, bread and pizza baking, Caribbean cooking, glass making, massages, handicrafts and much more.

Class enrollments, which in some cases for months, will open with a series of celebrations organized by the southern Caribbean community in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, a festival of the arts ¡Arte Viva ’06! From September 29 through October 1.

The events, originally promoted by EDACS, a non-profit agency whose main goal is to offer alternative and additional educational opportunities to the young people of the Caribbean, Puerto Splash (promoters of live musical events) and the Chamber of Commerce (Southern Caribbean), have grown into a grand exhibition in which all of the businesses and residents will feel involved.

We are delighted to report that the monetary and organizational contributions have been very positive on a local level. However, we are looking to outside donations to insure that not only this festival turn out as spectacular as we are planning, but more importantly that the educational and artistic programs that we are offering remain permanent.

The Cultural Center in Puerto Viejo will be transformed into an exhibition hall presenting art work, sculpture, photography, graphic design, ceramics, mosaics, glass works, handicrafts, and poetry by local artists (including students) as well as international artists.

On a large stage near the bus stop, musical groups comprising of more than twelve bands from San Jose to Manzanillo, theater groups from as far away as Alta Talamanca, students, marionette groups, sports, music and dance groups will all be performing including the crew of Papaya Music presenting their new release Calypso Limon Legend featuring famous pianist Manuel Obregón, banjo player Manuel Monestel and the Legends of Limon Calipso Orchestra on Sunday October 1 at 7:00

Near the Cultural Center on the streets which will be closed to traffic, dozens of restaurants will offer their specialties in out-door booths at popular prices. Street performers will be present to help bring the event alive.

Other restaurants and bars which normally offer artistic and cultural events on the weekend will take part in the festival and indeed have agreed to support us financially.

These events will enable us to present Puerto Viejo as it truly is: a culturally vital city where great music, fine arts and scrumptious food are interconnected, where one constantly discovers wonderful choices and whose multi-ethnic community realizes that the future belongs to its children.

. . . something simple but extraordinary is about to happen in Puerto Viejo of Talamanca.

Most importantly, we will try our best to set up a permanent educational program in music and arts, for which your financial support will be greatly appreciated.
