I remember it was at 2.04 on Tuesday, the 16th of September as I sat, watching in amazement at my computer monitor shaking as we experienced an earthquake tremor (5.0) here in the Central Valley area of Costa Rica.

Nobody was hurt and I should assure you that it has been a very long time since we have suffered any major, devastating earthquake activity in Costa Rica but for me, it is always a reminder of the incredible power of Mother Nature.

Since moving to Costa Rica I have lived a much healthier, outdoor life and more than ever, I appreciate what’s truly important in my life…

I remember the very hot, humid days when I lived on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and worked on Wall Street. Leaving my air conditioned apartment, rushing through the steaming streets to get to the subway which was always much, much hotter than above ground.

Eventually arriving in my office downtown, a man-made environment, with temperature controls, lighting controls, mood controls, artificial fragrances and mind-numbing elevator music and even more mind-numbing elevator conversations.

This apparent ‘control’ lulls us into a false sense of security where we actually, genuinely believe that we are ‘secure’ then, when an earthquake tremor comes along and you feel the very ground you’re standing on shaking, you are reminded of how precious your life is and that no matter how much control we ‘think’ we have, security in any form is an illusion

Accepting that has given me a great sense of freedom and I have Costa Rica to thank for that… Accepting something or someone for they way they are is important.

Some people believe that the Costa Rican people (the Ticos) are “just the same as us except they speak Spanish.” They certainly have the same desire and fears as we do but there are differences…

To live happily here (or in any other foreign country), we must accept and respect the fact that there are differences
