Search isn’t quite coming up with the answers to my questions so I’m hoping some of you wonderful people can help me out or at least point me in the right direction. I currently receive survivor benefits for me and my son. The amount for each of us qualifies us under the dollar amount, however it is not forever. Mine continues for the next 5 years and his for the next 7 years. Everything I’ve seen requires a permanent subsidy for Pensianado status. I want my son to experience another culture as I was lucky enough to live in Iran, Libya and Saudi Arabia before the age of 16. I doubt there is anything the Tico’s can throw at me that is beyond what I have already experienced! But I don’t intend to stay forever, a year or so at most. So what are my options here? Any suggestions? Thanks for any and all help!

If your intention is only to stay a year, it may be cheaper (and certainly simpler) to remain in tourist status. Yes, you’ll have to leave the country every ninety days, but that will be cheaper and easier than obtaining a residency status you really don’t want. What’s more, with the way things are going at Immigration right now, if you applied tomorrow you might not get your residency granted before your year is up.
