Festival de la Luz 2009 Parade

One of the local newspapers explained how it was “a night of cold noses and warm smiles” and I must confess that it always brings a smile to my face when you see so many Ticos putting on gloves and scarves as the temperature drops a little below 70 degrees.

Maybe it’s my Scottish blood but anything above 50 degrees is still T-shirt weather for me as long as I’m moving around …

At 6pm with thousands of colourful flashes and explosions from the firework display in Parque La Sabana 2009’s Festival de la Luz started off with a bang.

The music of the the Banda de San Jose began the parade as the first float of the evening past with all the soccer players from the under 20 Costa Rica soccer team smiling and waving…

Una niña en el pais de las maravillas was the second float and with a giant white rabbit on board, one of the favourites.

The 50 members of the Comité Cantonal de Deportes de San Jose cheerleading team and the 80 members of the Grupo Piratas All Stars de Alajuelia showed themselves to remarkable young acrobats.

The brightest float of the night was followed by 150 musicians – with Christmas lights built into their outfits – from Palmares who played their rock version of Jungle Bells and then the more tropical Los sueños contruyen al mundo float passed by …

A few meters behind, the band of the Colegio María Inmaculada of San Carlos playing White Christmas were accompanied by some more acrobatic jumps performed by the cheerleaders from the Universidad UACA.

Followed by The Eagles Las Aguilas the cheerleaders of Colegio Enrique Malavassi with batons flying high in the air.

With 175 members the Banda Comunal de Orotina was most definitely the largest and loudest followed by the Costa Rica Toursim Institute’s float “Aquí se cura todo” complete with a smiling whale, windmills and a rainbow.

The all girl band Colegio Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados played while the cheerleaders from the Universidada Latina strutted their stuff, “The Bobcats” cheerleaders were there, the band from the Colegio Francisco de Sarchí, the Leones de Alajuela and, the Banda de Acosta playing the Little Drummer Boy and were all present on this festive and happy night.
