Michael Simons has been living in Costa Rica since 2003 after being involved with a number of successful businesses in the U.S.

A few weeks ago Michael dropped by to see me one morning in San Jose to chat about what he loves about living in Costa Rica and as you’ll see, we share a passion for this big little country called Costa Rica and the warm and friendly people who live here…

We won’t reproduce the entire transcript of the video here – Michael is more than eloquent – but here are a few important quotes:

“What really made me move here truthfully was I really saw the opportunity of Guanacaste and what was going on in that area and I really felt if I didn’t make that move now years would go by and I would back later and would regret it and wish that I had made that move … ”

“There was the opening of the new Four Seasons Hotels, the new Liberia International airport and “all the writing was on the wall that everything was going to happen in Guanacaste that had happened in Hawaii and other places around the world…”

Michael loves the Ticos (the Costa Rican people) and the friendliness of the people and says that: “I’ve never felt more welcomed anywhere in the world… I’ve never felt like I was foreigner here.”

“…you’ve got your adventure every day.”

“Come with an open mind… finding the right area” is important…

“… come and meet as many people as you possibly can, come and get involved in the community.”

Question: Is there a key to successfully living in Costa Rica?

“… that doesn’t necessarily mean that everywhere in Costa Rica is a good place for a foreigner to live.”

“… there may not be a support network.”

“It would be no different from somebody from from Kansas moving to New York City and just being stuck in the middle of the city… do your due diligence and find the right area that’s for you… it’s very important to have that support network” to have these friends to help you to adapt.

After all this time are you still happy living in Costa Rica?

“I’ll never go back to the United States… Some of the best friends I’ve ever met in my life are here both Costa Rica and North American clients of mine.”

“The nice thing about Costa Rica is you can very easily from San Jose fly anywhere in the world…”
