A Wednesday in the office took a turn when our friend, and recent founder of a tree house community, called and invited us to his ‘finca’ for the night.

Having been there several times before, my boyfriend and I packed our rubber boots and hiking jeans and jumped in the truck. We arrived at the rainforest community, just 40 minutes East of Sierpe, ready for an adventure. 310 acres of Costa Rican rain forest nestled in between two gorgeous rivers just waiting to be explored.

So we pulled on our harnesses and were off to the zip lines; the best way to explore the canopy from within it. A leap of faith and you’re off, soaring high in the trees. Zzzzzz? By the time we reached the 7th zip line we were feeling like pros and excited for the most spectacular views of the roaring waterfall and crystal clear river 150 feet below our dangling feet.

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, the 8th zip line took us right over the top of the first completed tree house, which also has an excellent view of the waterfall and Rio Bellavista. Harnesses and helmets in hand, we stopped at the tree house, lowered the drawbridge and relaxed to the sound of the water below.

As the light sprinkle of rain turned into heavy drops then thick sheets, we headed back to base camp crossing an Indiana Jones style suspension bridge hanging 50 feet above the now rushing river. After taking cover, we peeled our soaked clothing from our refreshed, cool skin. And as the rain continued to come down with more gusto, our host asked, “One olive or two??”

We had front row seats to this once in a lifetime lighting show so we sat back in our zero gravity chairs on the second story balcony of this stilt built home amidst the canopy and sipped grey goose martinis from plastic cups. Though we had been exposed to the sensory overload of nature’s beauty for the past several hours, this outdid the rest, it was the cherry on top.

You no longer have to imagine a place where wi-fi meets the sounds of rushing water, hot showers are enjoyed with a view of the canopy and you can zip line to your tree top destination where a martini is waiting for you. It has become a reality in the Southern Zone of Costa Rica. Sustainable creature comforts make enjoying the rain forest that much more enjoyable.
