    Thanks for the info.

Just booked a flight out for the end of March. The total cost with all taxes and fees was $518.00 RT for 2 people, and no extra charges for seats or the 1st suitcase.
Had been using Spirit out of Tampa, but had nothing but problems with them, so we will drive the 80-90 minutes to fly nonstop out of Orlando. Can’t beat that.

I heard a few weeks ago on the news that airlines purchase their fuel a year in advance! So it looks like that year has run out on all the airlines, as I too have noticed the increase in flights. Alot of them are now going to charge for the first checked bag, and even a fee if you want and aisle or window seat. I wonder what would happen if eveyone chose to sit in the middle seat (lol) AAA said if you see a great price on a flight don’t hesitate, because you most likely won’t see the fare get any lower.

Has anyone tried the golden rod dehumidifers? I read some info awhile ago on them. They are made for use in mostly boats. I did a search on them and Boaters World sells them in 3 different lengths. They seem like they may be a good idea for closets and rooms with electronics. If anyone has heard of them or used them, I would like to know if you think they would work.

Just an update to say that I finally received my refund from Spirit! It only took about 10 to 15 phone calls. I did send an email, which you really have to search for in their website, and after weeks the response back was that my creidt card was given a credit. Since this was finally settled, I went ahead and purchased our next trip, since I had a voucher with them. The trip is only costing us $2.78! I will make very certain thatwhen I leave from Tampa that non one is going to be cancelling my return flight. We will see what happens this time.

    crhomebuilder,
I’m glad to hear that you had NO problems with Spirit. Mu husband and I just got done recently flying with them as well. We did not have the same luck. I had originally purchased 2 Rt tickets from Tampa to C.R. in April. I was checking there website and noticed that the flight for our travel dates was greatly reduced, so I called them and paid the $140.00 penalty on my charge to in return receive a credit voucher for $424.00 good till April of 2008! So far so good! I had all my e-tickets with pre-paid baggage and seat assignments when we left on 8/31/07. Our return flight from C.R. was on 9/7/07 and when we got to the airport we were told that we had cancelled oour flight! The only way that we could leave was to purchase a one way ticket back to Florida! He said he had no idea of what had happened and I would have to take it up with the airlines when we got home. I now had to charge #434.00 for one way tickets. He then had the nerve to want to charge me for our luggage as well! That didn’t happen.
There was no problen leaving C.R., but when we got to Ft. Lauderdale, my husband was flagged for having a one way ticket. There is a code of ssss on the ticket.

I immediatley called Spirit the next day and was on hold for 2/1/2 hours without ever reaching a person! I called back 4 more times that day, as when I did finally get through after at least a 1/2 each call, I was allways disconnected when they put me on hold. There is no longer a local number in the states to reach them. The calls are routed to either the Phillipines or the Dominican Republic. When I finally reached a supervisor after at least 5-6 phone calls, she told me it was AGENT ERROR. I am still making calls to them as I have not been credited to my credit card as of today.
I also have a friend who told me she had a problem and it took a year for her refund. They have also been in the news here with another issue lately.

I am just writing this to advise people to beware and make sure that when they are leaving the states that it shows that there is a return flight in the system again.
I’m sure many people have flown without incidence, but there customer service is horrible!

    David,

My husband and I have flown on Martinair twice out of Orlando. They were both great flights. The first one was a little late arriving in Orlando, the 2nd was on time. They also serve a nice little box lunch with sandwich, fruit, and a cookie! Oh,I almost forgot, yes they do have seatbelts and a co-pilot! lol

Since we have a Washington Mutual bank close by, I wanted to check this out. There website at wamu.com does list free foreign and domestic wire transfers. It also states ***Wire Transfer: Non-refundable foreign currency exchange charges and intermediary and beneficiary bank fees may apply. I am currently with AmSouth in Florida, and they have been charging me $35.00 for my wire transfers. It may be time to change banks!

    Hola Lotus,
Yes the market in Florida is picking up. With NO major hurricanes last year and a new governor in office who said he would do something about the high cost of hazard insurance there seems to be people out there buying again. We closed on one of our rentals in Jan.that was on the market since May! The person that bought it is from Hawaii, but has a brother here in Florida, who is interested in our other property. I won’t say how long that one has been on the market or I will become ill again.(lol) It has been a nighmare, but hopefully the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter. Once that one sells it will bring us a little closer to our permanent move to C.R. and the Pura Vida life!
So, VIP members light a candle or say a prayer for us!

    mustardgirl,

Here is a link that will give a breakdown of all the costs involved in closing. You can input your registered value/sales price and it will calculate for you. I guess if it is a 50/50 split it would be half the cost? http://www.costaricalaw.com/LEGALNET/real_estate_law/closecost.php

Scott, Speaking of tile floors, I remember a thread about what to have your maid use to clean your tile floors. Did you ever have her try the vinegar and water? Just curious to see how it worked.

    aguirrewar,
we must be around in the same area. If you see my earlier post, the property that I spoke of is in St. Pete. That is where our other property that is still up from sale from March is with NO tenants! If we were not planning a permanent move to C.R. next year they would most likley not be up for sale at this time. The person that bought our property is from Hawaii, and his brother who lives here is a realtor/investor. Trust me when I say there was alot of creativity done to close. There seems to be alot of people from California also still buying in this area as prices are still alot cheaper than they are there. Thank-God I have great credit to cover the mortgage payments(with low interest) so we don’t have to go into foreclosure. Our personal residence is in Safety Harbor a few blocks from old Tampa Bay. This is still a very desirable area. We have not put our own home up for sale as of yet, will watch to see what the market does, and I have till the end of this year befor I retire.
    Buena Suerte,
    Debbie

    quonaroi,
Scott is right, there are alot of us in the same boat. My husband and I have had two of our rental properties up for sale since March and April. They are both multi-family. We listed both of them with a realtor/friend that we had dealt with many times befor. We lowered as well many times. Befor we left for our trip to Costa Rica in Oct. of last year I went very low on one of them, and told him that when we got back would we dropping him, if no sales offer. That’s exactly what we did and we put up for sale by owner signs. Within a few weeks I had a call, and we just closed on one of the properties last Friday! The buyer’s brother is also interested in making an offer on our other rental which has been up for sale since March with NO tenant’s to help pay the mortgage and the HIGH cost of insurance. We are in Florida. We will be coming back to Costa Rica in March to close on our property. If you haven’t allready, you may want to come up with some creative idea’s such as paying for cosing costs, first years premium on hazard insurance( may not be alot in Michigan but it’s exteremely expensive in Florida) Pay a bonus of an extra $1000.00 to the selling agent. Most of the time the listing agent is not the one that sells the home anyway. That way if the realtor has several propeties with their client in same price range, they WILL push for yours because of the extra $1000.00 above their commission.
    I wish you the best!

I wish that we could have a section dedicated on what to bring to Costa Rica for the big move. I have learned a lot from this forum among others. We are already putting together a list of things that we will need to bring. For the most part it will be kitchen stuff and linens. We do LOVE to cook! Jenny, we also love to do a lot of spicy food and Cajun cooking, so we get a lot of our spices from a store that originally opened in Wisconsin. We have lived in Florida for 12 years and they are not down here, so when we make a trip back up north we either stock up or order online. They have everything! A lot of gourmet blends. We rarely use salt in cooking! They even have seasonings for making your own sausage! After trying to buy Italian sausage when we were in Costa Rica in Oct. for a dish we were making, I know we will be making our own when we make the move. So if any of you use the mail forwarding service their website is http://www.penzeys.com
Big ice chests(coolers) I have also heard are expensive. I do have a question on peanut oil. Do you know if they sell it in Costa Rica, in the BIG 3-4 gallon size? Did not have a need for it when we were there in Oct., but thinking of bringing our turkey fryer, for deep fried turkey, among other things it can be used for. Well, I just got hungry so time to go LOL!
Thanks again for all the info!
    Debbie
p.s Scott, Anyway that you put something dedicated on this website, on what to bring? I promise you will be invited for some of that deep fried turkey!
