So what impact, if any, does this foretell for the value of the dollar in CR?
Without using “poison”, would like to know the best way to keep ants at bay. Am thinking about bringing orange oil, a natural insect repellent, next time. Any thoughts on this?–or suggestions of ways that have helped in your situation?
Recently won the battle with the small kitchen ants!

Blend 50/50 mixture of baking soda and white, granular sugar. Doesn’t take much, a half teaspoon 2 or 3 places on the counter top in a bottle cap or small dish – they will find it. Best if you can find point of entry and make it super convenient for them to find your potion.

Apparently they cannot tell difference in consistency of the 2 ingredients. The sugar attracts them and they carry both back to their nests and the baking soda kills them. Our ants were gone in 2-3 days and haven’t returned.

Google “baking soda and” as well as “vinegar and” and you get some pretty cool, non toxic homemade solutions.
Hola,
My wife and I will be moving to Costa Rica within the next year. Based on research, we have narrowed our options for relocating to two locations. We have never been to Costa Rica, but we know this is the place for us. Our purpose for creating this post is to gather information from individuals who have spent time and lived in either of these places. We would love to hear some pros and cons for each area.

As a little more information about us. We are both in our mid 20s and have been married for almost 3 years. I am getting out of the US military and really want to pursue opening a restaurant after we have gotten a good feel for Costa Rica. We truly enjoy exploring outdoors and an exciting night life. Any of your suggestions and information about these two locations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Wow, you have an interesting decision making process. You have decided to move to a country that you have never visited and you have even decided on one of two towns to live in without visiting either and your goal is to open a restaurant that you can not legally work in until you have permanent residency. (Incidentally, you mentioned that you are in your mid 20s, so if you have also decided to start a family I suggest that you wait until you get here. I believe that having a baby in CR offers a faster pathway to permanent residency or perhaps citizenship??)
Seriously, before you pack up all your belongings and head south, it would be advisable to visit each of those locations (and perhaps others) and maybe even take a rental of 3-6 months in each place to “live the dream” a bit before jumping into it.
And also, thanks for your service to the USA (there are some on this forum that won’t offer that thanks, but I will – and now I have!)
We have sold our house in New York and have no intention of ever living in New York again, and most likely not living in the U.S. again (although one never knows). We hope to eventually end up in Costa Rica, but my husband’s work is taking us to Australia for months or possibly a couple of years first. I am baffled by trying to figure out what to do about a mail forwarding service. What I don’t understand is the implication of the location of the service in the U.S. and whether we will then be considered residents of the state where it is located (the address we are using). It seems advantageous to use a state (e.g. Nevada or Florida) that doesn’t have a state income tax, but I don’t know what else to consider. Any suggestions, experience, thoughts are greatly appreciated!
I have several boating friends that have used this service for 5+ years as they make their way around the world. They all seem to be very happy with it.

Check for PM I sent to you.

    Bill,

Did you send me info on an ac company or a metaphor? I did not see anything in the PM except some metaphor.
It was a complete answer with a couple of suggestions. It shows in my “sent” folder just as I sent it, so don’t know what the problem is.
Anyway, I am on the road to SJO and can only offer one suggestion at this time.
Contact the people at Casa Caleta. They have 8-10 a/c rooms, so they must know a service tech.
I have had several reports of people being told they have no choice but to be vaccinated in order to cross into Nicaragua from CR. Since you have already exited CR, you can’t return without a stamp and to get it you have to be vaccinated.

No one will tell you what is in the vaccination, except that it is “to clean the blood”. It cannot be against the mosquito virus from Haiti as there is no vaccine against that yet.

    So, what is going on????
Just back from lunch with good friends that did the border run last Friday. No requirement for vaccination or even proof of “onward travel”. They had heard from friends that went earlier in the week that they needed a copy of their passport in addition to the original, and they had that but were not asked for it.

The folks that went last Friday were out of their car, checked out of CR and into Nic, went to duty free, back out of Nic and into CR and on their way home in less than an hour and a half.

    You never know………….
Since you mentioned shipcostarica and shiptocostarica, I thought I would tell you about the quotes I received form both companies. My husband and I live near Philadelphia, and I have been getting quotes for shipping a 40′ container. Barry Wilson’s company quoted me a price of $11,990. This includes customs duty. They will give us 3 hours to load the container. Charlie’s quote was $9178. This also includes the duty, and he will give us 4 hours to load the container. Both companies will deliver our goods to our house in CR and unload.

A third company quoted me $9,100, but this DOES NOT include customs duty!! I have been patiently waiting for over a month for 2 other companies to give me their promised quotes.

And while I am at it, I’ll mention that both companies have storage facilities in CR should you need it. Wilson charges $350/month and Zeller, $320/month.

This is probably one of the most informative, to the point, helpful post I have seen in a long time. I don’t need the information (I’m already here) but I am sure that a lot of people will benefit from this information.

    In my opinion, “Nicely Done!”
If your pension income is $850 while you’re Social Security benefit is $2,700 (1 person) then if I understand correctly I’m screwed since I would be forced to use the $2,700 s income. Is that accurate?
Yes, you could be “escrewed”; however a friend of mine going through the pensionado residency process has a non-social security pension of almost $2,000/month and he submitted verification of that pension to migracion.

He just received his resolution document from migracion, and it says that is pension “exceeds $1,000 per month” (translated). This statement may save him $100’s of dollars per month on Caja.

My resolution document stated EXACTLY what my SSA pension was, so I can’t tell you for sure what will happen – but good luck.
Before posting, I did a search on this forum for “residency renewal” and the most recent discussion thread was late in 2011, so I am confident that things have changed since then.
Our first renewal (Pensionado) comes up in November, so I figured I can never stary too early gathering the information I will need to help me through the process.
I would like to hear from others who have recently (3-6 months) completed their FIRST RENEWAL, and what the process was (is).

    >> How early can you start the process?
    >> What is considered “last minute” for filing application?
    >> How long does the process take?
    >> What documentation is required for application for renewal?
    >> Is it still possible to do at certain BCR offices?

I have kept and have available a big stack of “cambio receipts” demonstrating that I have exceeded the necessary exchanges, so that’s not a worry.

Any other information or advice will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

After all, this request is for the kind of thing this blog is designed for….. advice!!

Again, thanks in advance for any word or help!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Costaricabill’s advice is right on the (pension) money…8)
In fact, you cannot combine the income from two individuals when applying for residency.
But you never know what Caja may choose to do. When you apply for Caja now they now look at your “Resolution” from immigration, and that document states the amount of income you will be receiving from your pension. So to get 2 Caja accounts they will look at both resolutions. You never know what they will do,but they may add the 2 amounts together to determine your monthly Caja payment(s).
