Tamarindo is a popular hot spot primarily because of the beaches and the tropical surrounds but as its popularity has grown it is now also home to some fantastic restaurants where you can sample the native cuisine — or even something a little more international if you’re in the mood.

If you’re feeling a little homesick there’s also plenty of options to choose from in order partake of a more familiar palate.

The sheer number of restaurants available to the discerning diner makes for an interesting and challenging time just choosing where to go for dinner. The first choice is to decide on whether you want to treat your taste buds to the local cuisine, or enjoy the flavors of a meal with cultural ties from further afield.

A little multiculturalism can be enjoyed at the Lazy Wave where your choices range from grilled lobster tails and mussels all the way through to escargot. A decent selection of cocktails can liven up the evening, or you can choose from one of the many wines on their rather robust wine list.

While the menu might suggest a stuffy formal setting the décor of the restaurant actually promotes a more relaxed environment where you can choose to dine at a table, or simply sink into the pillows on their cushy lounge chairs.

A great start to the day can be had at Breakfast Grinds, a not so flashy establishment on the edge of Tamarindo Resort. Enjoy their bottomless coffee as you watch the world drift by. The décor of plastic chairs and tables doesn’t spoil the view any as you gaze out over the picturesque scene of Tamarindo beach while enjoying a pinto of black beans and rice, served alongside a perfectly ripe avocado.

Fancy a good ‘ol fashioned burger ‘n fries then try the grilled cheese burger at Surf Shack Burgers & Wings, which you will find nestled in the Tamarindo Circle. Burgers are created from a perfect marriage of Angus and Nicaraguan beef, served between two lightly toasted slices of bread, with crispy fries and a salad on the side.

While not so flashy on the outside the inside is quite impressive with corrugated floor to ceiling walls covered in elaborately decorated surfboards. A bar crafted from solid wood and polished to a high sheen with matching tables finishes off the décor for a unique dining experience.

Fancy a bit of sushi in a tropical garden setting complete with bubbling fountain then head on over to the Bamboo Sushi Club. You’ll find a lovely collection of cocktails to enjoy with one of the range of Asian meal choices, as well as a fairly comprehensive range of sushi dishes — each one presented as its own unique work of art.

There’s also plenty of dining to be enjoyed with an international flair. Enjoy a more Californian style of cuisine at the Dragonfly Bar and Grill, or for something Argentinian make your way over to the Patagonia, which is famous for its steak and Patagonia salad.

People with a hankering for Italian can find what they’re looking for at the La Pachanga with its homemade pasta, chicken, and fish meals. As you can see all palates are catered for with the plenty of fine dining to be discovered and savored in and around Tamarindo.
