Unless you are already intimately familiar with Costa Rica and already know exactly where you want to live, why buy immediately? Take your time and explore first!

OK! Some real estate developers I know may be calling me about this later today but …

Slow down! There’s no rush to buy a home in Costa Rica today! As with any investment, you need to do your homework, check out the lay of the land before you make that big decision and plonk down your hard-earned money to buy.

Why not explore the country thoroughly first? Visit different parts of country until you find a spot that you really love. Visit different B&B’s and stay for a week or two…

I could imagine myself living practically everywhere I visit, whether it’s Puriscal, the Orosi Valley, Turrialba, Grecia, Cartago, the Barva area, the Los Santos area and a zillion others…

There are gorgeous areas all over Costa Rica but, Costa Rica is not for everyone so take your time getting to know her.

Ah! But! You say – “I don’t want to throw my money away on renting when I could be building equity in a home.” Good point! And I am not suggesting that you explore forever, I am encouraging people to get to know Costa Rica properly before they start thinking about buying.

Some people have a clear idea about what’s most important to them in the places that they want to live, others are not quite so sure and this ‘not so sure’ group certainly needs to take time before making the very serious financial decision to buy real estate in Costa Rica.

If you buy a home in Costa Rica instead of renting one, you would have the freedom to do whatever remodelling you want in your own home, to make it more comfortably ‘yours’ and perhaps more valuable. With well planned improvements, your home may appreciate dramatically in value.

My point is that if you have done your homework first, made sure you’re focusing in on the right area and dealing with the best real estate professionals, buying Costa Rica real estate can be a very profitable investment.

If you have taken a good look around the country before you buy, you will know the area well and have a better appreciation of prices in the area than most people.

Then, when you buy, you will be buying at a price that you ‘know’ is right!
