Here in Arenal, Costa Rica, we have been so successful in our spay and neuter program that we now have some homeless dogs spayed or neutered, vaccinated and healthy with only one thing missing: they are waiting for that best friend to provide a loving home.

Let me give you a quick history of our little pueblo. When I arrived almost eight years ago, Arenal had an excess of abandoned dogs and cats. The true horror of the condition was that I was to learn when the population of those animals climbed above an unknown number, certain members of the community took it upon themselves to set out poison to kill off what they believed to be the excess population.

It was that knowledge that prompted me to hurry and get a sterilization program going to curtail that inhumane practice. I knew the only way to get ahead of the “assassins” was to humanely castrate and neuter.

During those almost eight years, we have worked unceasingly, and have surgically sterilized almost 600 animals — cats and dogs — in and around Arenal. We have made a huge difference making the surgery very low cost and affordable to all, and in some cases getting sponsors to help defray the costs to people who could not pay. Obviously homeless animals can not pay, hence the help of sponsors.

Without the generosity of people helping me, I truly don’t know how we could have ever accomplished what we have done. And I am eternally grateful to those kindhearted people who have contributed to ease the suffering of the animals for their donations.

It is my plan to try to find homes for some of our sweet pooches and kitties by placing their photos on WeLoveCostaRica site and giving a little personal information about each one so today we would like to introduce you to “Princess”…

I met Princess about a year and a half ago as a sick abandoned puppy wandering the streets scrounging for whatever tidbit she could find to eat She’s a girl and it is the girls that are tossed out first and of course that is because they can become future Moms. . I got help from some people in feeding and caring for her and I donated my time and money to give her medicine and get her well.

As soon as she was healthy with a good diet, we surgically spayed her and she came through her surgery with flying colours. She weighs around 35 pounds. Princess is being cared for in a foster home but the lady taking care of her is not in good health and has two other dogs of her own. So, Princess needs a home.

Princess is high spirited, loves to play, and is very affectionate. She loves toys, plays tug and toss. She is a loveable little pack rat. She loves to collect all her toys or whatever she can find out and about and pack everything into her bed and then crawl in and sleep with her stash. If you think Princess is just the little pooch for you, please email me – Gloria Dempsey here.
