I have more visitors here in Costa Rica than I ever did while living in Florida. I like having friends and family visit because they make me do the ‘touristy’ things which I don’t get the chance to do very often.

This past week I had the opportunity to go white water rafting–something I had not done in about 10 years. I really was excited to go and also to go rafting in Guanacaste.

The last time I tried rafting was 10 years ago on the Paquare and Reventazon Rivers on the east coast of Costa Rica. This time around I challenged the Upper Tenorio River, about a 45 minute drive south of Liberia.

This 2.5 hour long white water adventure was amazing! I had sent many a client on this tour, yet never actually tried it out. I thought it was time I did.

I don’t like recommending tours that I have not personally done, although every client I had sent with the tour operator, Rios Tropicales, had nothing but good things to say about them. Our guide Juan, was wonderful, and we managed to all stay in the boat and have the time of our lives. I definitely got a workout, but it was the fun kind of work out.

The upper Tenorio river is beautiful and on the border of rain forest and dry forest. The backdrop of the Tenorio Volcano is majestic. The class IV and V rapids were exciting and the trip ended with a 12-foot drop.

We were told that 70% of the people that go over that drop flip their boats, but I think we were all huddled down and holding on for dear life for that not to happen to us. We managed not to flip over, but did applaud those who did as they came over that waterfall. That was the best part of the tour without a doubt.

During the tour, there were more calm parts of the river that were lacking lots of rocks so you could just jump in and do a free float. For those who are not interested in class IV/V, there is also a class II river float on the Corobici River, which I would recommend as well.

If you have plans to visit the Guanacaste area, I would recommend the Tenorio River for white water rafting be on your ‘must do’ list.
