1. Costa Rica has no standing army!

As someone who grew up a big history and war buff, only to discover all wars are fought for money. Knowing my tax dollars will no longer contribute to the murder of millions of human beings is quite possibly my biggest driving force to get to Costa Rica and one of many reasons why I love this peaceful country.

  3. No zoo’s!

As a big lover of animals and a firm believer in the fact that ALL life is precious, and no innocent creature should be imprisoned.  I will one day soon take great pride to live in a country that no longer imprisons (and therefore tortures) animals for profit which brings me to my next “why”…

  4. No hunting for sport in Costa Rica!

This is a big one for me, the thought of taking a life to feel like a “big man” or for whatever reason they kill innocent animals is enough to make my stomach turn. I absolutely LOVE Costa Rica for this one!

  5. Love of and respect for of nature!

In North America we’d bulldoze the Garden of Eden to build a mall. In Costa Rica even the sidewalks are built “around” the trees. Instead of leveling a small forest to build a home, locals will build around the natural beauty. The love and respect they have for all of nature is another one of many reasons why I know this is my future home.

  6. Life isn’t ruled by the clock!

As westerners run the hamster wheel of life while “living the dream “, racing to work, banks, schools and everything in between worrying about tomorrow while regretting yesterday. Living the endless cycle of work, spend, sleep, repeat. Costa Ricans are spending quality time with loved ones enjoying the Pura Vida lifestyle unphased to what digits are on a watch. Being late… doesn’t really exist to them.

  8. They don’t fall for consumerism!

Most westerners seem to live by the worst phrase I’ve ever heard. “He who dies with the most toys wins”. In order for us to keep up with all our payments for our toys and useless trinkets we spend most of our lives working jobs we don’t even like. Now a day both parents have to work long hours and have day cares raise our kids just to live paycheck to paycheck.

Leading to a life of financial stress, fatigue and exhaustion from lack of sleep. Often leading to divorce and broken homes. In Costa Rica, people are quite content to have just what they need. And would not trade all the family time and easy going lifestyle to accumulate “stuff” that nobody really “needs”.

  9. Way more freedom in Costa Rica!

We have cameras on every corner watching our every move, signs all over the place telling me what I can or can’t do. We are constantly being fined for stepping out of order.

Photo radar dinging people for going 4 km over the speed limit, fines for no helmet on a bicycle, walking your dog without a leash, paying over $6,000 in fines and fees because your wife had 1 glass of wine at dinner and drove home!

In Costa Rica you can have a beer and drive, you won’t be fined if your dog isn’t on a leash or if you’re not wearing a helmet while cycling, cameras aren’t monitoring your every move. In the west our government has somehow become our parents dictating our lives and we have become children yet again.

  10. The great climate in Costa Rica!

Living in Canada I hibernate 6 months a year. I love my summers here but I’m only living half my life. Life is way to short to spend half the year waiting for the other half. With 7 micro climates one can choose his or her most suited climate and enjoy life 12 months a year! Imagine that?

  11. Self-sufficiency!

There is no better place in the world to me for being self-sufficient  than Costa Rica!  Gardens and orchards can grow 12 months a year with a wide variety of fresh organic fruits and veggies, a plentiful ocean can supply a family with fresh seafood on a daily basis.

Clean fresh water from creeks and springs, with lots of sunlight for solar powered energy. That’s my heaven

  12. Happiest country in the world!

Not much needs to be said on this, it pretty much speaks for itself. In Canada people need anti-depressants to be happy (4th highest use in the world) Costa Ricans don’t need pills for that!

I’ve always felt like I was born in the wrong country. My views and outlook on the fore-mentioned topics have never really “fit in” with the majority of my fellow countrymen.

Upon discovering Costa Rica it has become very clear to me where my home really is, and I will stop at nothing to one day “go home”. Really glad for the opportunity to express myself on this topic.

Here are a few more quick ‘whys.’
