The position of Tamarindo creates the perfect environment for a surfer’s dream. Offshore winds and consistent swells provide for excellent surfing all year round.

Surfing conditions around Tamarindo can be found for all levels of surfers from beginners to advanced. The beach at the center of Tamarindo offers a more forgiving experience for beginners who are just starting out.

The best surfing here can be had during the mid-high tide.

Directly in front of the Tamarindo Diria is Pico Pequeno, a rocky point which creates challenging conditions for seasoned surfers during mid tide. Southern swells provide for even more challenging surf conditions over the rocks of Isla Capitán — a small islet located in the bay of Tamarindo. Grab your board and head 1km south of Tamarindo to Playa Langosta and you will find a right and left point break which provides for some excellent surfing opportunities.

If you are after some great surf at low or high tide then you can cross the river and walk for about 3 quarters of an hour until you arrive at Avellanas. Nick named “Little Hawaii” you will find beach breaks with hollow left and rights providing plenty of challenge for the more seasoned surfers. If you aren’t into walking you can also drive to the area which is a 16km via trip via Villarreal and Pinilla.

Playa Negra, often reported as the best place to surf around Tamarindo, and even all of Costa Rica is 5km south of Avellanas. Waves come fast off a right point break with the best surfing to be found during the changing of the tides.

If you want to avoid the crowds to get in some quiet surfing you can paddle across the river to a favorite area for many surfers, “La Casita,” where you will find some pretty fast beach breaks. Continue up north and you will find another area with left and right beach breaks.

As you can see there’s no shortage of areas for some great surfing in Tamarindo and its surrounds. If you are a beginner in need of some lessons you will also find quite a few reputable pros who are more than happy to show you the basics.
