Suicides are a tragedy anywhere in the world but I must confess to being somewhat shocked at the numbers that I accidentally came across doing some research this morning…

The female suicide rate per country is detailed at NationMaster.com here. You will see that the USA is at #39 with 4.4 female suicides per 100,000 people. Costa Rica is at #69 with 1.2 female suicides per 100,000 people.

The male suicide rate per country is detailed at NationMaster.com here. You will see that the USA is at #30 with 19.8 male suicides per 100,000 people. Costa Rica is at #58 with 7.1 male suicides per 100,000 people.

If these tragic numbers are correct, 266% more American women kill themselves in the USA than Costa Rican women, and 178% more American men kill themselves than Costa Rican men.

In Costa Rica, a country of about 4,500,000 people assuming that women and men each make about half the population, that would mean 27 women and 159 men kill themselves every year. If Costa Rica had the same suicide rate as the USA that number would increase dramatically to 99 women and 445 men.
