Last Friday was a big day for the many health conscious people living in and around Samara Beach.

The downtown Farmers Market opened up to rave reviews as many locals, expats, and tourists alike took advantage of fresh organic fruits, vegetables and foods never before available in Samara.

The Farmers Market takes place every Friday from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM in front of Samara Organics at the Natural Center in downtown Samara. Several vendors sat out in the shaded community area of the Natural Center and welcomed the many happy customers.

Adjacent to the Farmers Market at the Natural Center, Samara Organics, an organic grocery and café, had its grand opening celebration in full swing. Samara Organics is dedicated to providing an alternative to highly processed foods produced thousands of miles from Samara.

They offer locally produced cheeses, organic fruit and vegetables, and hundreds of other healthy products that include 100% bamboo clothing and holistic body care made in Costa Rica if not within the Guanacaste area.

Angelina Phillips and Brandy Lauher, the two owners of Samara Organics, sat down and talked with me about the passion that brought this business to life here in sunny Playa Samara.

Angelina tells me, “When my husband and I moved to Samara five years ago, we could find only a few of the items we customarily used as our food staples. Even the slim pickings of organic products that were here in Costa Rica required the long trek to San Jose to stuff our car or over pack our luggage with our occasional trips to the US. I knew back then that one day I would open this store to supply quality and healthy foods to those who wanted them. We have been pleasantly surprised to hear from so many of our neighbors that they too have been looking for more healthy alternatives and now they can buy them right here in Samara; at Samara Organics.”

The shelves are lined with delights like organic chocolate, pesto, olive oil, raw organic honey, organic brown rice, local whole leaf teas, super foods, and dried fruits and nuts, coconut water and kombucha, and healthy fast food to go.

They also have a café that features the Samara Organic House salad with mixed organic greens, cranberries, almonds, feta, tomatoes with balsamic vinaigrette.

They are hoping to work with local restaurants to offer organic produce on their menu and continue to promote Samara as a destination for those interested in an earthy-friend healthy lifestyle.

The store itself has a great vibe and I feel instantly welcome. Picture a cross between an old-fashioned country store and a small scale Whole Foods. Brandy offers me a sample of some fresh goat feta cheese made only a few miles away and adds, “We are so stoked about being able to also offer our customers outrageously good meals, made with the healthiest ingredients.”

I find it hard to concentrate as the cheese delights my taste buds. The smells coming from the cozy kitchen are enticing. “Samara Organics is a great option for breakfast, lunch or take out. Eat here and enjoy the friendly vibe or we can set you up for an outrageous beach picnic, dinner at your home or hotel or just a healthy snack on the go,” says Brandy.

Organic coffee and tea drinks, smoothies, heavenly baked goods, organic wines, and dozens of other healthy taste treats pique my interest.
