Build Your Own Retirement or Vacation Home In Costa Rica.

For those of you dreaming of building your own affordable home in Costa Rica, this series of articles will show you what's possible working with a modest budget.

This is my own vacation home and you can track our progress because I took lots of photographs and published articles so you can see what we did and, I have made it crystal clear how much it cost to build.

This type of rural location and rustic, wood panel construction is not everyone's cup of tea but, we love the cozy, earthy, natural energy of a home built from wood and, although we're only 15 minutes from a small town it's our refuge, an oasis of peace, with silent, star filled nights and beautifully clear, sunny days.

This home could be located in any one of a hundred, different, beautiful rural locations in Costa Rica. There are so many stunning places in this country where great deals can be had 'if' you have the time and energy to find them.

We built a two bedroom home, with one huge bathroom, an open plan living room and dining room area with a large terrace at the front with awesome, panoramic views to the valley below, a good sized kitchen, a study upstairs and lots of windows, a large fireplace, a bodega where I chop and then store the firewood (leña) and a garage area.

New Resort Style Retirement Community in Naranjo Starting At US$240K With Seller Financing The Costa Rica guidebooks scarcely mention Naranjo. It has no claim to fame like Atenas' "Best Climate", or Grecia's "Cleanest City", yet it shares the same year-round spring-like climate and the intimate charm of a tranquil small town. With an estimated population of around 20,000 in the Canton of Naranjo, an elevation of just over 1000 meters, and direct access to the Pan American Highway; Naranjo should be considered when looking for good real estate values in Costa Rica. . . . Build Your Own Costa Rica Vacation Home For Under US$100K Our original plans called for a slightly smaller house and I had hoped to spend less than US$80,000 however, we ended up adding a study on the second floor and this added to the overall cost but at the end of the day, we built a 1,797 square feet vacation home ... . . . Costa Rica Architect Gloriana Mejia
Is Steel Frame Work a Better Construction System? If you have recently read my articles, you may have noticed I am a huge fan of steel frame construction. Many people think that's the way to go when building a home in Costa Rica: not only does it save money on labor work but it also shortens the overall construction phase. . . . Keep reading

Building Your Own Home in Costa Rica. A look back at 2010
Architect Gloriana Mejia
Building Your Own Home in Costa Rica. A look back at 2010 Last year was a great year to invest in small construction projects. Material prices were reasonable, given the end of the "real estate and construction boom" that affected not only Costa Rica, but markets worldwide: materials otherwise overpriced for the last 5 years, were widely discounted and good bargains were found everywhere. . . . Construction in Costa Rica. Some potentially dangerous electrical problems
Costa Rica Homebuilder Tom Rosenberger
Construction in Costa Rica. Some potentially dangerous electrical problems In most new construction, three prong electrical outlets are visible to the average person and if they have been properly connected with three wires, your electrical devices will provide years of convenience. However, in older, inexpensive housing, two prong electrical outlets are common and do not provide protection for your electronics. . . . Keep reading

If you have not spent much time in Latin America, you may not initially notice the lack of amenities that you have taken for granted your whole life. Many times it isn't until after a foreigner has purchased a home in Costa Rica, and had the time to live in it for a while, that they realize the amenities they are missing. . . . Keep reading
