My name is Scott Oliver and as a 50 year old British entrepreneur who first arrived in Costa Rica in 1999 and, I never planned on helping thousands of people to live and retire in Costa Rica and certainly never imagined I would be writing books about real estate.

But I also never imagined that there would be so many boiler room scam artists selling ocean view land - without the ocean view. Most of these ruthless "closers" lived in Florida and had never actually been to Costa Rica but, in sending out tens of millions of promotional emails per week - you may have received them yourself - they sold a lot of land to trusting folks dreaming of a nice retirement home near the beach who assumed that everything would be OK like it was "back home."

But Costa Rica is not like "back home" and these despicable predators know how to play the game and work around the laws in both the US and Costa Rica. You see, Costa Rica's legal system is based on Napoleonic Laws and not Common Laws as they are in the US & Canada and it's a Spanish speaking country so buying real estate can be confusing. There is no Multiple Listing Service and, unlike the Realtor in your home town, every Tom, Dick or José is selling real estate in Costa Rica because they need zero qualifications, training or experience.

This means that when it comes to buying Costa Rica real estate, which may be one of the biggest investments of your life, you may be listening to 'expert' advice coming from someone with zero qualifications or training in real estate, who is trying very hard to earn a commission selling you a property that could be dramatically overpriced...
