Living in Costa Rica - What's in YOUR freezer?

Look around most people's freezer's in Costa Rica and you'll notice a common theme, they don't have much more than ice cubes in them.

Sure you'll find some ice cream in a few, maybe an icepack in others, but what you typically won't find is FOOD. The last time I went to the U.S. to visit family it really made me think just how different I really do eat now that I live in Costa Rica.

Switch to fresh fruits and lots of veggies and live longer and happier!
Switch to fresh fruits and lots of veggies and live longer and happier!

My parents not only have a freezer full of food, but an additional freezer packed, along with huge pantries filled with all sorts of boxes and bags of food.

Here in Costa Rica it's different, my wife and I buy very few things that come in a box and we don't buy any sort of meals that are prepared by simply just throwing them in the microwave. Fresh fruits and vegetables and an overall better diet is one of the hidden secrets of living in Costa Rica.

While the American diet is just a recipe for high blood pressure and diabetes, the Costa Rican diet gives you the chance to eat healthy.

In the U.S. you are discouraged to eat fresh, it costs more and it takes more time to prepare. Go to the market and you'll see a fresh fruit bowl for $5-7, you can buy 4 egg McMuffins for that much!

Here in Costa Rica it's the opposite, fast food and processed foods are actually MORE expensive that fresh food. More seafood, less red meat, smaller portions, less bread, it's no wonder why Costa Ricans have one of the longest life expectancies in the world.

So if you are making the move to Costa Rica, be prepared to adjust your diet, but don't worry it will only end up being one of the healthiest decisions you'll ever make.

I used to eat cereal everyday. But my wife and Costa Rica changed that, telling me "cereal no es un desayuno" (cereal is NOT a breakfast). Now I eat fresh fruits and eggs for breakfast every day.

Costa Rica has an amazing assortment of fruits. Mangos, pineapple, watermelon and papaya are just a few of my favorites.
