Getting your teeth whitened is a major industry in the US these days.

There seems to be, besides your local dentists' office, literally an unlimited number of places that you can have this done. From malls to mobile dental clinics to rows upon rows of products pushing the 'perfect smile' the promotional marketing and societal pressure to get those pearly whites pearly again is nothing short of phenomenal.

There is one little catch however. Yes! If you are relatively young, say under 40, there is a good chance that the whitening procedures used by dentists will restore, to a degree, that smile (even less with the OTC stuff) that stares back at you from magazines and billboards but...

As you grow older and the smorgasbord of food and drink choices accumulate your enamel pays the price for your addiction to Starbucks, that favorite red wine, the extra squeeze of lemon juice on your shrimp and of course the sugar content that inhabits almost everything we eat.

For most of us over 40 the best route to pursue is veneers. What are they? Veneers are wafer-thin laminates or shells of tooth-colored material and can be fashioned from porcelain, ceramic or composite bonding. Composites are cheaper but really should be avoided unless it is used only to repair a small chip where the structural integrity of the tooth is retained.

Now, once you have chosen Dr. Mario here are the steps involved. Usually the whole process can be accomplished in 5-7 working days.

• First an initial consultation with Dr. Mario. Once veneers are determined to be the best choice your teeth will undergo a minor modification to accommodate the veneers.
• Then a mold or impression will be taken using a special dental putty.
• The mold will be sent to Dr Mario's in-house laboratory so that the veneers can be accurately fabricated based on your dental mold. In the US and Canada most dentist send these impressions out to outside labs for the veneers to be cast that can take up to 3 weeks. In Dr. Mario's lab it takes less than one business week and any changes or modification can be made on the spot.
• When you come in for the initial sizing the veneers will 'sit' on your teeth to be examined until Dr. Mario is satisfied with the fit.
• Once that is done he will thoroughly clean your teeth and then...
• Ever so gently etch your teeth so that the cement will hold.
• Then a special curing light will be used to activate the cement and insure a proper bonding.

You then can sit up and look in the mirror at your beautiful and natural looking teeth.
