According to the Costa Rican Tourism website: "... it's estimated that for the end of 2005 the country will have experienced the stay of 1,671,000 visitors." The majority of those visitors fly into Costa Rica's capital city, San José and, the closest major beach town to the capital city is... Jaco beach.

Jaco beach is on the Central Pacific coast, only 73 picturesque miles west of San José and this area has changed dramatically in the last few years and, continues to develop.

Should you wish to swim in the Tarcoles river on the way to Jaco beach (NOT recommended) these local residents will be the first to welcome you.

An increasing number of tourists from all over the world to come to Costa Rica and during an excellent, succulent steak dinner a few weeks ago in Jaco beach at the Aberdeen Angus Argentinian Steak House (643-3153), we could hear the voices of the French, Dutch, German, Italian, American, Canadian, Japanese and Tico tourists... At certain times of the year, Jaco beach is a lively party town for the Ticos who flock here from San José however, there are more upscale attractions (and some downscale attractions, if you know what I mean..,) and more North Americans and Europeans are partying the night away here too... The little town of Jaco beach really only has one main street which is filled with small hotels of various prices, steak, seafood, pizza and 'comida tipica' restaurants as well as numerous surf shops and souvenir stores. Most people get around on bicycles or on foot. At this time, I am pleased to report that there are no major fast food restaurants in Jaco beach so I guess that means that it's still not busy enough for them yet and, as you can see from the photographs, vast stretches of lush, green farmland surrounding Jaco remain so there's no way that you can say that there's no room left for further development. One of the main attractions for Jaco has always been the surfing and you can see dozens of surf shops along the main street offering their colorful new boards for sale. One beach further south, Playa Hermosa, is a more hard core surfers beach.

Jaco beach was always an attraction for surfers now more 'retired' surfers are buying real esatte here.

Costa Rica's Jaco Beach: The Jaco beach sand is not white, it is dark-gray but it's soft to touch and marvelous to walk on at sunrise, sunset or, any time of the day. Anywhere there is water, there are potential dangers so treat this magnificent Pacific ocean with a great deal of respect when you are swimming or surfing and you'll be fine.
Unlike a few of the other beach towns like Tamarindo which has both water or sewer management problems, Jaco does not. Although development is increasing rapidly, the infrastructure seems to be keeping pace with the new projects.
