Beginning in 1996 (only ten beaches qualified then), the Ecological Blue Flag program rates beaches and communities by criteria that include the quality of the ocean water, quality of drinking water in the community, waste disposal, availability of sanitary facilities, the existence of signs with safety instructions as well as the involvement of the community in keeping the beach clean and educating the local residents about the importance of maintaining their beach in order.

Jaco recently received the Blue Flag award for the second consecutive year. Neighboring Hermosa Beach, the site of the Billabong ISA 2009 World Surfing Games also received the honor.

All of us in the Jaco community, including local businesses, city council and volunteers have all worked together to improve and make a better Jaco. Visitors who may not have visited Jaco for a while may be surprised with the improvements.

The mayor of Garabito, Mr. Marvin Elizondo said "We received the news with great satisfaction reinforcing the hard work that has been going on in Jaco in preparation for the World Surfing Games.
