There's a Silver Lining in Costa Rica's Gold Coast
Scott Oliver - April 2008
Printer-Friendly Format

Interest in living, retiring and owning a home in Costa Rica is still very high however, with more serious economic problems in the US (where 60% of our visitors are from) and Canada (10%), even though the market sentiment appears to have improved during the last 60 days, the fear level living or investing in another country which is a major life decision remains high.

Franklin D. Roosevelt once said that: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." He added that: "Nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat and advance."

Fear is indeed paralyzing and having met with hundreds of people who have made the move to Costa Rica and who are living happily here, one of the most common statements we hear from them is something like: "We never realized it would be quite as easy as it was... And only wish we had done it sooner."

In a New York Times article on the 16th April 2009 entitled 'There's a Silver Lining in Costa Rica's Gold Coast', one well known Guanacaste Realtor was quoted as saying that: "there are virtually no new projects breaking ground now.... I'm going to swim against the tide of conventional wisdom here and predict that the real problem we'll face is next year when we'll have no inventory to sell."

In the same article, Mr. Michael McNulty aged 47 of Philadelphia also said that: "When we saw the economy sliding, we worried about our long-term investment, but now we find ourselves in an enviable position as pioneers here."

Making a move to a new home, especially in another country is always a challenge but surely "conventional wisdom" can only result in a "conventional" life and is that really what you want?

I believe that now would be a good time to invest in Costa Rica because as we have also said for some time, there will be a lack of quality real estate in the not so distant future and demand will return. And, we all know what happens when there's a limited supply and increased demand, right?

For our VIP Members who wish to buy real estate in Guanacaste, don't forget that our Recommended Realtor Becky Clower is offering a free Guanacaste Condo Price Comparison Spreadsheet which would be a great tool in helping you to evaluate different projects...
