One of the reasons why living in Puerto San Luis on Lake Arenal in Costa Rica, is so accommodating is that, while it feels like you are tucked away in the greenery that surrounds Lake Arenal, it is also very close to the city of Tiliran.

Tilaran is one of the nicest, cleanest and most improved towns in the Guanacaste Province and is located about 20 minutes on paved roads off the Pan American highway.   Tilaran and the surrounding areas have a population of around 20,000 people and is located about 10 minutes from our lake side town of Puerto San Luis.

Nestled half way between Cañas and Nuevo Arenal, in an endless fertile landscape of green rolling hills, volcanoes and mountain rain forests. Tilaran-easy to get to from the airports and Pan American Highway is the Guanacaste Province doorway to the beautiful Lake Arenal region of Costa Rica.

It is small enough that there’s not a lot of the hustle and bustle of a large city, but big enough that you can find almost anything you could need or want.

Tilaran is home to the many grocery stores, electronics stores, a holistic nutrition store, a few fantastic fruit stands, hardware stores, dentists, doctors, bike stores, veterinarians, numerous clothing stores, restaurants, bars, organic farms, micro brewery,  eco-tourism resorts, health and wellness centers, and some of Costa Rica’s most fascinating eco-tourism attractions close by.

Tilaran and the surrounding lake area has the luxury of being serviced by primarily well maintained paved roads and infrastructure, with no traffic!

We also enjoy a very temperate climate year round with average temperatures ranging between 25 – 29 degrees Celsius.

The Tilaran area hosts a large community of traditional and organic farms producing some of the countries finest fruits, vegetables, organic meats, fish, dairy and coffee products available in Costa Rica.

Tilaran’s population is a healthy mix of interesting people from around the world.  The majority of the city’s population are Costa Rican farmers and professionals making up a close welcoming community.

In addition to the local Costa Ricans there is a good mix of ex-pats from North America and Europe living comfortably in the city of Tilaran and around Lake Arenal.  Overall the people in the area are very open,  friendly, and helpful.

We are thankful to be able to live in the Tilaran area, which for me is one of the most uniquely beautiful, clean, safe, green settings in  Costa Rica to call home.
