I’d like to introduce you to my wonderful new friend in Costa Rica – originally from New Jersey, USA – Nadine Hays Pisani.

You may have read about Nadine’s new book: “Happier Than a Billionaire: Quitting My Job, Moving to Costa Rica & Living the Zero Hour Work Week” which was featured on CNN last week..

“She and her husband, Rob, both chiropractors, had a comfortable life in York, Pennsylvania, but they were miserable. Both were working long hours, hated their jobs and felt burned-out. So they came up with a bold plan: Sell everything and find a country with a warm climate where they could live for about $1,000 a month. They would stop working and live off their savings and interest. They settled on Costa Rica.” (1)

I’m not for a second suggesting that you do that – although you can certainly dream about it – but answer me this:

“Are you always trying to get somewhere other than where you are? Is most of your doing just a means to an end? Is fulfillment always just around the corner or confined to short-lived pleasures, such as sex, food, drink, drugs, or thrills and excitement? Are you always focused on becoming, achieving, and attaining, or alternatively chasing some new thrill or pleasure? Do you believe that if you acquire more things you will become more fulfilled, be good enough, or psychologically complete? Are you waiting for a man or woman to give meaning to your life?” (2)

And did you know that: “It is not uncommon for people to spend their whole life waiting to start living.” (2)

Are you one of those people who is waiting to start living or, are you more like Nadine and her husband who now live close to the beach in Tamarindo in a home they rent for $150 a month?

“It’s paradise,” Pisani said. “I wake up. I have a great cup of coffee. There are parrots outside my window. There are monkeys in the trees. It’s such an exceptional way to live.” (1)

Because you know that: “The psychological condition of fear is divorced from any concrete and true immediate danger….” (2)

We have VIP Members who email me every day asking about crime in Costa Rica and, it’s often kind of funny because on so many occasions they are emailing me from cities where the crime is so much worse than it is in the worst possible place in Costa Rica …

You know! Exotic places like Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Dallas, Detroit, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Columbus, Memphis, Baltimore, Washington DC, Atlanta, Kansas City, Cleveland, Miami, Oakland, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Newark, Buffalo and Mobile…

Why is that people are always worrying about the wrong thing!

“This kind of psychological fear is always of something that might happen, not something that is happening now.” (2)

Why worry about being murdered in Costa Rica when you are far more likely to kill yourself?

Yup! You read that right!

It’s even more likely that you will die in a vehicle accident in Costa Rica or drown!

People obsess and I do mean obsess about crime in Costa Rica even though the odds of them being involved in a crime are very, very low …

Don’t Listen To Me! Do your own homework.

Sure! It’s easy to point to the latest if-it-bleeds-it-leads headline that’s a daily feature in some Costa Rica English language “new” sources but, at the end of the day, visit the U.S. Department of State’s website to see the Death of U.S. Citizens Abroad by Non-Natural Causes and you’ll get the cold, hard facts!

[custom_script adID=151]

You can download the .pdf file here which shows all non-natural deaths of U.S. citizens in Costa Rica in the past five years – December 2005 – December 2010 here (the latest date for their records) and you’ll see we have a grand total of 17 homicides of U.S. citizens in Costa Rica, Mexico had over 300…

17 divided by 5 years = 3.4 murders of U.S. citizens per year in Costa Rica for the period December 2005 – December 2010 according to the U.S. State Department and hey! If you have a problem with the numbers, please don’t moan to me, feel free to email the State Department and see how helpful they are …

In the same period, there were 23 suicides of U.S. citizens in Costa Rica, 44 of them died in vehicle accidents and 41 U.S. citizens drowned but do we get people in our Discussion Forum asking about how likely it is that they will die in a vehicle accident?

Nah!

Nadine says that: “I’ve had a very, very good experience. I don’t know if I could go back to how I lived before. I made a mistake by thinking I always had to have something new to make myself happy. I never considered that nature can make you happy, being outside can make you happy. I worked a 10-12 hour day. I was never outside.

This experience has taught us that happiness is completely inversely proportional to more things. You need to have less, I believe, to have a life filled with gratitude. And right now, I do, I have a life filled with gratitude. I’m happy for the small things.” (1)

“Stress is caused by being “here” but wanting to be “there,” or being in the present but wanting to be in the future.” (2)

Is that you?

Are you doing exactly what you want to do right now?

Nadine are her husband are, so why can’t you?
