What’s the hottest thing on the Gold Coast right now? It’s not the sun, it may be the real estate, but it’s definitely not the tourism, but maybe it should be.

The onset of November combines so much of the best of what the Guanacaste has to offer, shoulder-season rates for restaurants, hotels, tourism, and discounted shopping as vendors unload last season’s wares.

Not to mention everything is still green and growing from October’s rainfalls, the air is cooler than December, and overall the area is enjoying a pleasant climes.

Just outside the beach towns, in the forests of Guanacaste, there is a war raging, with an overgrowth of morning glories besieged by their persistent flowering weed cousins.

No doubt the smell of spring is ripe in the air, the volume of rain is peeling back quickly, and the mosquitoes are being overtaken by their winged predators, the dragonfly and butterfly.

Even the ocean herself seems to be gearing up, cleaning up for the assumed hordes of tourists, all packing their flip-flops somewhere out there right now.

So what IS the hottest thing in Tourist-town right now?

The renovation business.

While many businesses have already completed their intended expansions and paint jobs, the rest of us are doubling down on the labor hours right now to put the finishing touches in place for the aforementioned hordes.

Word on the streets from the hotels is that the season is looking good for tourism. It’s make-or-break time; the time when many proprietors either make their rent for the rest of the year or find they need a new passion in the wake of a disastrous season.

For my wife and I, with our pizzeria, PIZZA&CO (in Tamarindo) we pray we are in the former.

Our pizzeria has been trucking along well since we re-opened her doors in July of this year, so far, with October being our best month yet. We hope we are putting our money where YOUR mouth is, investing in a new mixer and another oven, doubling down on our productivity.

The whole thing will be wrapped in a new paint job, and if I have my way, topped off with a new sign out front… but we are not the only game in town.

All around us kitchens are upgrading, new places are opening doors, and old places are expanding for the big gamble: Can we all pay for all this when it’s all said and done? I’ll get back to you on that… like around April or May.

For the business prospector moving to Guanacaste to purchase or start a business, this is likely not the best time for taking candy from babies, as everything is on a steady incline through the busy season. That said, as is the case with all things buy-and-sell, there is always blood to be found on the streets if one looks hard enough.

Don’t be discouraged if you are on track to get started now. Worst case scenario you will be the only bidder on whatever project you are bidding on. Just expect the seller to be a little less negotiable as everyone around here seems to think they bleed gold right now.

For the prospective tourist, this is a great time to come see why the Gold Coast is the most visited area of Costa Rica, with all the freedom to roam and conquer as you will.

For all the reasons listed the world is your oyster in Guanacaste right now, and who knows, you may find it hard to leave.

You wouldn’t be the first person to wander into paradise, pop a tent, and get lost forever. Or bring a paintbrush and come see me… I may have some work for you.
