We love living on the beach in Guanacaste but every now and then, it’s nice to go up to Arenal lake to cool off and spend some time with my Uncle Frank.

If you have never been to this part of the country, you are missing out.  Cool temperatures, zip lines, amazing wildlife, waterfalls, great food and a variety of hot springs are the main attractions to this area.

No trip to this Arenal is complete without a visit to the hot springs.  Tabacon is the most famous place to go but there are many more to chose from.  My personal favorite lately has been Las Laureles on the way to La Fortuna from Nuevo Arenal.  This is where the locals go.

They have private ranchitos where you can hold up for the day, BBQ, ride all the water slides, keep an eye out for the volcano to break free of the clouds and soak in the hot mineral springs. Believe me that a day in the springs will cure what ails you.

Another fun thing to do is to go kayaking.  It never ceases to amaze me how little the lake is used.  You can look out on the lake all day and maybe see two boats!

Last time we went, I looked up a local kayak guide service by the name of Arenal Kayaks.  They knew exactly where to take us, were very affordable and their kayaks were in great shape.  Highly recommended!

It is important to mention of of the best kept secrets on the lake, Casa Delagua in Rio Piedras.  There you will find some excellent comida tipica (local Costa Rican cuisine) at an affordable price while listening to great music and enjoying amazing views of the lake.

That’s where you with find my uncle’s book store, Frank’s Books as well as the art gallery of a very talented local artist where you can purchase some amazing work!

Take my advice and make a trip to this beautiful part of the country as soon as you can…

Fun on Lake Arenal.
