Guanacaste is an ocean lover’s paradise.

While in other parts of Central America you find mostly black sand beaches, which reach volcanic temperatures for much of the day, the Guanacaste Province located in the North-West region of Costa Rica has mostly lighter colored sand with many trees along the beach that offer a respite from the sun.

The water temps are perfect and these conditions allow for you to spend a lot more time on the beach.

Being an avid surf for most of my life, I fell into surf fishing. To me, surf fishing blows away fishing from a boat.

While I will never catch a marlin from the beach, the excitement of sight casting a snook or hooking into a big pargo (Costa Rican word for red snapper) offers a challenge that will keep me coming back as long as I can still stand on my own two feet.

Surf fishing and surfing have a lot of similarities. You have to be in tune with the conditions. Tide changes here on the West coast can change more than ten feet in a matter of only six hours.

You have to know where to go and when. We also tend to covet our secret spots. A lot of times, I do what I call the “cast and slash” I will paddle across the estuary on my surfboard with my fishing pole in my teeth. Once I get there, if the waves look good, I surf. If the fish are jumping, I fish. A lot of times, I do both.

In fact, at this moment, I am about to do exactly that. Ciao!
