This pitiful example of a Christmas tree (arbol de navidad) was spotted in the entrance of a Post Office in Santa Maria de Dota which is located in a rural area of Costa Rica (surrounded by zillions of trees) about 90 minutes from San Jose.

Where did they get this tree from? Or perhaps they just saved last years’ tree?

And what a great job they did in hiding the bright white electric cables eh?

Jeez!

Larry W – one of our VIP Members – emailed me the following about this tree which I thought was wonderful…

“Dear Scott – While I don’t have an entry for the ‘ugly tree’ contest let me weigh in thusly. True, that tree, like so many of us, is not well proportioned, not ‘beauty’ to our eyes, trained as we are to see symmetry as beauty.

Whatever forces of nature, or man, resulted in the oddly proportioned tree we do not know. What we do know however, is that it endured extreme difficulty and did the best it could.

Despite the difficulty it provided every bit the comfort to birds and insects and creatures in its original habitat that nature intended. Its life was ended by man, the ugliness of haphazard cords in stark color was man’s doing.

I could go on at great length but will close with the suggestion that love ought not be withheld from the ‘ugly.’ We need love too! And perhaps a new title? “The Ugliness Man Hath Wrought on the Beauty of Natures Presents”

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all!”

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too Larry!
