There are so many “moments” here. After our flight, my wife and I ride to our destination in the warmth of the midday sun.

We crest the final hill and head onto Penisula Papagayo and there is our first “moment”.

Laid out in front of us is the vast blue of the ocean with the peninsula jutting outward. The resort buildings, all nestled into the hillsides so as not to break from the natural beauty of this place. Next is the “moment” of our first dinner.

Our wine glasses in hand, we watch the sunset into the ocean in a burst of orange as we hear the crashing of the waves below on the shore. At that moment, we can smell the onions and garlic and hear the sizzle of our steaks as our private chef creates our perfect meal. We bring wine glass to lips… Another “moment”.

On the golf course, many more “moments”. Each hole brings its own view, a dizzying array of vistas. There are the moments scuba diving, or horseback riding, or kayaking. Even our morning tennis and the canopy tour on zip lines over the forest that afternoon, each of these a gift of a precious moment.

But the real unforgettable moment comes on the second to last day of our stay. Upon venturing into the jungle on our arranged jungle tour with the screeching and hooting of the hundreds of parrots and other birds, monkeys as well. The heat and beauty of the jungle with its green canopy over head and the lizards scrabbling along beneath our feet.

As we move along, we feel it first. The pounding of the falls. Moving further along we hear it, then break through to an immense opening and stand paralyzed. Rising at least 100 feet above and crashing into a beautiful pool at our feet with the suns rays that streak into the clearing causing a rainbow across, are the falls.

My wife and I, frozen with the site, stand hand in hand. The power of that sound drowning out even our own thoughts. In that moment all else is forgotten… the petty arguments, the little problems at work, and even the big ones. We are as we were when we first met.

Just ourselves together, that tingling feeling in our stomachs, with the mist of the crashing water enveloping us in a cool vaporous blanket.

When I am able, I turn my head and look at my wife’s beautiful face to see a single tear sliding down her cheek.

We moved here permanently the following year.
