During lunch, George a young American friend of mine, was telling me about the new home he has just rented in Moravia, San José, Costa Rica.

George is a young entrepreneur in his early forties who has been visiting Costa Rica on business for a few years but only moved here to live full-time about eighteen months ago. He has been dating a gorgeous Tica and wanted to find a better home for her and her young daughter in an area that was convenient for work.

George was driving around San José with another ‘gringo’ when they noticed a man putting a ‘For Rent’ sign (Spanish = Se alquila) on two brand new homes…

And some people think Costa Rica is expensive?

George is far from fluent is Spanish but he made himself understood when he asked the owner how much he wanted to rent the homes for… The owner replied that he wanted to rent them for US$350 per month and George asked if they would get a discount if they rented both homes right now…

Bottom line? They rented two, brand new, two bedroom, one and a half bathroom homes in a fairly good area of San José for US$250 per month each.
