What I love about Costa Rica is the wonderful retirement it has afforded us.

I love living near the rain forest with the clean water, fresh air and a perfect climate. The people are the best, absolutely the best. They always have a smile and a handshake waiting for us.

This little business we started has introduced us to all of our community. The more I get to know the Ticos, the more I like them. They are true friends.

It is easy to be involved in the local community by volunteering in the local schools or helping the local towns spay and neuter the street dogs. There are so many areas of need and the money goes directly to the source. No government agency skimming money off of the top. In Costa Rica, you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors.

What’s The Secret to Living Happily in Costa Rica?

The true secret to living in Costa Rica is to become involved in local towns. Go to the vegetable market on Saturday and visit. Ticos love to barter and talk. Walk the streets of Orosi; they’re safe and interesting. The Sunday soccer game is always a place to visit and shake hands.

Our North American community has parties every month. Everyone brings a covered dish and their beer for the get together. Parties start at noon and end at 4pm. Everyone’s workers leave at 5pm and during the rainy season, the rains start at about 4pm, so it’s time to go home. This month, we have had 3 parties with 25 to 40 people at each gathering. We have more friends in the Orosi Valley then we ever had in the States.

Living in Costa Rica, wow, there is no comparison to our life in the USA. Half of the year in the States is hot or cold. Living in eternal spring is more invigorating. We have more energy in Costa Rica than we ever had in the States. You only sweat if you want to sweat in the Orosi Valley.

There is no way we could afford a 12-acre flower garden in the USA, but we can in Orosi. I would estimate the cost of living at 25% of what it would cost in the USA. I believe the quality of life and food is better in Costa Rica. We have our veggie garden where we grow organically and share with the bugs.

I will never be able to thank Costa Rica enough for what it has done for us. Our life is as good as it gets. Like I said at our lunch, I feel sorry for anybody in the world that isn’t me. My life is nearly perfect.

If my best friend back home was planning to move to Costa Rica, the best advice I could give him would be “to get down here as soon as possible. Don’t waste another day. You have no idea how great life can be until you take the chance and give Costa Rica a try.”

Steve Riley and his wife have lived in Costa Rica since 2003 and they live in Orosi de Cartago, Costa Rica. Steve prides himself on “our dedication to excellence, our workers, support staff and customer service” and “being able to “provide the client with the best product at the lowest price.”

Steve also tries to live up to his favorite quotations by Robert Frost: “I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference” and “there is nothing worse than being ordinary.”
