This acknowledgment is called Ecologic Flag. This means that a company or businesses has considerably reduced its energy consumption and improved its treatment of the solid waste and residual waters.

Roberto Dobles, Environment and Energy Minister, was glad to admit that more Costa Rican companies want to contribute with the environment and improve their businesses possibilities.

This certification does not involve an economic reward. The point is that they obtain a differentiation of their product. They can show their customers and the world that they care for the environment and the citizens.

‘The certification has been a long process. People’s culture has to change.’ We have to learn how to classify our waste, when to use our car, and how to reduce energy consumption. It is not easy, but it can be done. Being friendly with nature and having a document that proves it, is a competitive international advantage’ says Wall-Mart Corporative Manager, Yolanda Fernández.

The Certification Process:

  1. Each entity has to have a treatment water plan and a strategy for solid waste handling.
  2. The companies have to reduce the energy consumption, and have all the required sanitation permits.
  3. The companies should improve the security process and protection of their employees.
  4. They should reduce the use of pesticides, paper and emission of carbon dioxide. It will depend on the kind of business (tourism, agriculture and production of electric energy).

There are three kinds of flag. The maximum category is ‘The Green Seal’, follow by the AA and the basic is A.
