Many years ago, a lady friend emailed me and included a rather unflattering caricature of Prince Charles and his partner Camilla Parker Bowles.

Some people may not be in favor of ‘Royal families’ however, just as George W. Bush had little choice in ‘choosing’ his parents, Prince Charles didn’t have much of a choice in being born into the British Royal Family but he has obviously chosen his partner in life.

Camilla may not be glamorous by Hollywood standards but she obviously has something very special that the tens of thousands of other glamorous women that Prince Charles has met in his life do not have and, doesn’t every little girl dream of marrying her ‘Prince’?

And out of all the gorgeous women that must have made it crystal clear to him that they were available, having known her since 1970, he chose to marry Camilla.

Scott, what on earth has this got to do with Costa Rica you ask?

Costa Rica truly is a rich coast of a thousand magnificent, vibrant, living colors. We have 874 species of birds, some of which are incredibly bright, colorful and ‘glamorous’ yet, the national bird of Costa Rica is a very plain looking bird indeed as you can see from these photographs.

The “Yigüirro” or Turdus grayi which is also known as the clay coloured robin, was designated National Bird of Costa Rica on 3rd January 1977.

This bird is found throughout Costa Rica and represents the fertility of the earth and the richness of the Costa Rican soil. “Yigüirro” is pronounced ‘GEE-WEE-ROW.’

You know the rainy season is on it’s way – as it is right now – when you start to hear part of their beautiful song of the “Yigüirro” (gray colored robin) which normally begins a little too early in the morning. It is also at this time of the year that the Yigüirro settles down and raises a family.

To be chosen as the national bird of Costa Rica, this very drab looking bird obviously has something that the other birds do not have…

An uplifting, very delicate spring-like song because as you probably know, sometimes the plainest birds like the “Yigüirro” have the sweetest songs.
