Playa Hermosa or ‘beautiful beach’ is an easy thirty minute drive from Costa Rica’s Liberia International Airport.

If you choose to drive from the capital of Costa Rica – San José, it will take approximately five hours however, it’s a fairly simple and direct route.

My girlfriend and I were visiting Villas del Sol (villas of the sun) with my parents, my two children Ian (aged 16) and Catherine (age 13) who were visiting from the US., as well as my lady’s sons.

We had arranged to stay in the Costa Rica beach villa of a good friend of mine whom I have known since 1996 when we first met in the Cayman Islands. He owns more than one villa in this resort so if you are planning a multi-family beach getaway and each family wants their own private villa then this is the man you need to speak with…

During the high season which is December through September, there is very little rain to worry about but do have to watch out for the sun… There may be a pleasant breeze that is wafting over this may make you ‘think’ that the sun is not that strong but be assured that the sun is very strong!

The beach villa is modern, air conditioned, well equipped with two bedrooms, two baths and two gorgeous balconies that offered up a spectacular views of the Pacific ocean and what seemed like the entire planet! The villa itself must have been the best situated villa in the entire complex.

Villas del Sol share their property and the beach with a time share development and hotel called Condovac. This enables you to enjoy all the privacy you would like to with your very own villa but also enables you and your children to take advantage of all the events and activities that are put on by the hotel.

There are always plenty of activities planned for the children, from bingo, movies, parties, ‘ping-pong’ and dancing. There is a basketball court, tennis court and a gymnasium next door to the main swimming pool. While we were there they even had a beer drinking contest but none of us felt up to that at 3pm in the afternoon.

One swimming pool in the Villas del Sol area has a swim-up bar, none of the four swimming pools are dangerously deep and the water in all of them is warm and inviting, not cold.

Please note that the Ticos do enjoy their music so you’ll find that Latin music playing at just about all the pools but hey! You’re on vacation, soak up the sun and soak up the sounds!

There are small shuttle buses available to take you to and from the beach. The beach isn’t far away from the villa we rented, probably only about 800 metres but, when it’s darned hot and you’re carrying towels, bags and everything else you must have – all the beach toys and ‘stuff’, you welcome all the help you can get and of course, getting to some of the villas at the top can be quite a climb.

The beach is clean and was not at all busy. The water is rarely rough and I have never felt any dangerous currents but of course you need to check out all that stuff for yourself.

You will also find a few entrepreneurs selling their special recipe of ceviche which you might want to try. Ceviche is simply raw fish marinated in lemon, lime, or sour orange, or a combination of two, or even all three juices plus hot peppers, green peppers, garlic, onion and cilantro. There’s a million different recipes…

A note on these ‘entrepreneurs’, unlike the beaches in Mexico where you will encounter incredibly aggressive ‘sales’ people trying to sell you various trinkets, in the four years that I have lived in Costa Rica, I have never come across any Tico (Costa Rica) who has approached me in this way. I would suggest that this type of aggressive sale is simply not part of the Costa Rican character or maybe they’re just not that desperate.

Be warned! The sun is strong here, if you are accustomed to the sun then you know what to do but if you are not, I would recommend that you stay out of the sun between 12pm-2pm and even then make sure you put SPF30 on the children.

I was born in Scotland but grew up in Africa so I am well accustomed to extreme temperatures but even I get slightly sunburnt from time to time. If you need to buy sunscreen or other last minute items, you’ll be pleased to know there is a small supermarket on the property.

Unless you plan on simply staying in your villa, I would suggest that this type of resort is probably best suited for families with children. On the occasions that I have been there, I don’t think we’ve seen any romantic honeymooners, it’s just not the place that one would go on a honeymoon then again, maybe they are all simply staying locked up inside their villas.

But if you are looking for a place where the children and the whole family can have a great time together, where the little ones will be completely knackered (tired) by the end of the day so everyone is in bed early. Then this might just be the place for you…
