When watching TV news, reality shows or scientific programs or when reading in the newspaper and magazines, it is evident the popularity there is for cosmetic procedures.

Recent statistics show that there were 9.2 million cosmetic procedures performed by qualified plastic surgeons. Of these 1.7 million were surgical procedures and the rest were non-surgical or minimally invasive procedures.

Traditionally most people have associated plastic surgery with only women, a situation that is not true at this moment. Men made up 1.1 million of those procedures, 13% of the total according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

In Canada the situation is very similar where cosmetic procedures in male patients represents 14% of the total procedures done.

The top five surgical procedures done by men are:

  1. Liposuction
  2. Rhinoplasty
  3. Eyelid surgery
  4. Breast reduction and
  5. Hair transplantation.

The top five non-surgical procedures done by men are:

  1. Botox injections
  2. Laser hair removal
  3. Microdermoabrasion
  4. Skin fillers and
  5. Chemical peels.

My personal practice has not been any different that these statistics. Most of my male patients tend to be mature executives who are looking for procedures that have a minimum recovery time and that makes them look fresh and rejuvenated.

This makes them feel more youthful and attractive for both social and professionals reasons.

It is not uncommon to have my male executive patients come for what we refer to as ‘combos’, combinations of surgeries or non-surgical procedures.

The most frequent one is a non-surgical ‘combo’, an office procedure in which the patient comes in for 1. Botox application, for the front and forehead area, and 2. Skin filler for the expression lines.

It takes 30 minutes with no recovery time and just a week later, their coworkers and family are wondering what special new vitamins they are taking to make them look so much younger and fresher.

The next most frequent ‘combo’ is a combination of surgical and non-surgical. It consists of 1. Eyelid surgery combined with 2. Botox and skin filler application.

This is an outpatient procedure with hardly any or, occasionally mild discomfort where after seven to ten days, the patient is back to work with a noticeable change, no visible scars and looks totally ‘refreshed.’

On occasions, patient will have some liposuction done around the neck and other areas with a similar recovery time.

The third most common combination is liposuction with gynocomastia which is male breast reduction surgery. Unlike the previous ones, this is not a facial procedure but a body contour procedure. Most of my patients are individuals who take care of themselves and exercise regularly and eat well.

However they do occasionally have certain troublesome fat deposits; ‘love handles’ and the front abdominal wall, that do not always respond to diet and exercise.

There are also many males that have enlarged breasts which makes them uncomfortable in public (and private) situations such as going to the beach or at a swimming pool or when starting a new romantic relationships.

Whatever the reason, they want to solve the source of their problem and I am here to help.

With this procedure, the male patient can be back at the office working within seven to ten days and into their regular exercise routine by the third or fourth week after the procedure. And as you know, my country Costa Rica can be a beautiful place to spend time recovering from any of these procedures.

Many male patients are surprised to see they recover much faster from the same surgery than female patients. This is basically due to the fact that they have much thicker skin with more muscle and more expansive blood supply.

Most busy male executives do not have the time to have extensive facial surgery such as a face-lift because it can easily take more than a month to recover and is obviously very noticeable in the first few weeks after it has been done.

Lower labor costs and a lower cost of living in Costa Rica have made Costa Rica plastic surgery costs significantly lower than in the United States or in any other country where the outrageous costs of insurance against frivolous lawsuits are literally forcing physicians out of business.

Written by Oscar who received his undergraduate degree of general medicine from the University of Costa Rica. He studied General Surgery in the same university and during his last year, he fulfilled the position of Chief of Residents and Interns and later worked as General Surgeon before continuing his studies.

His Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Specialization was done in the Jalisco Institute of Plastic Surgery in Mexico, under the direct supervision of world renowned Plastic Surgeon Dr. José Guerrero-Santos, and graduated with one of the best grades of his generation.
