Chiropractic was discovered in 1895 by Dr. D. D. Palmer when a specific movement to the spine of his patient, Harvey Lillard, resulted in the restoration of hearing.

Dr. Palmer knew that he was onto something miraculous because it is not every day that a doctor cures deafness in his office. His research and developments led him to the realization that the brain and spinal cord send not only nerve impulses (which are vital to the normal function of every system, tissue, organ, gland, and cell of the body), but also the central nervous system is responsible for maintaining communication between the body and the INNATE INTELLIGENCE (which is responsible for all of the metabolic and healing processes of the body).

Re-alignment of the articulations of the spine and body allows for the normalization of nerve messages, blood flow, lymph drainage, various types of energy flow including (but not limited to) the meridian energy of Acupuncture, and it restores a more perfect communication with the Innate Intelligence. Many misconceptions have developed since Chiropractic began.

One of the first of these resulted from Dr. Palmer’s choice of a name for his new-found science, philosophy, and art. His friend, a priest, was most impressed by the fact that amazing results were being observed by physical manipulations or adjustments that were performed by hand and without the use of drugs or surgery.

He suggested to Dr. Palmer the name “Chiropractic” which was derived from Greek words meaning “done by hand”. I believe many misunderstandings would have been avoided from the beginning had Dr. Palmer used Greek or Latin words which mean “to restore nerve function”, or “to restore normal structure”, or something on that order.

The science of Chiropractic has developed specific methods and techniques for the normalization of contiguous structural relationships in the body. There are a variety of different techniques for the specific adjustment of each or the spinal vertebrae, the bones of the cranium, the tempero-mandibular joint, the shoulders, the elbows, wrists, bones of the hand and fingers, and in fact for every joint in the human body.

Muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues can also develop structural irregularities that Chiropractic science has also developed many methods for correcting. Since all of these methods tend to normalize the structure of the body, the adjustment technique that a particular doctor of Chiropractic chooses is a matter of choice and personal preferences based on his own clinical experience with similar cases.

This helps explain why different people who have gone to Chiropractors have reported a wide variety of different experiences. Even people who go to the very same Doctor of Chiropractic can report very different treatment methods because no two patients have exactly the same health problem.

Chiropractic has risen to become the third largest profession within the healing arts, and it is the largest natural healing profession in the world.

The accomplishments of Chiropractic with musculo-skeletal conditions are undeniable, even by the established Allopathic medical community, which has maintained an antagonistic attitude toward Chiropractic since its beginning.

In December of 1994 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared that Chiropractic is the safest and most effective treatment for the resolution of back pain. Hundreds of thousands of patients with low back pain, spinal disc bulges, sciatica, neck pain, scoliosis, headaches, migraines, radicular syndromes, brachial neuritis, and many types of neuropathies have found relief from Chiropractic treatment.

Chiropractic’s benefits are not limited to musculo-skeletal conditions, however. All organs of the body require a normal nerve supply. An organ that is not receiving a proper nerve supply cannot possibly function normally, but organs do not send pain messages directly to the brain, and it is therefore very difficult to know when there is inadequate nerve flow to them. The spinal nerves split into two branches they exit the spine – one going to muscles, and the other going to particular organs.

Testing the function of various muscles can indicate an abnormal nerve supply from the spinal level to the muscle, and therefore possibly also to the organ.

The science of Chiropractic has developed specific testing methods that allow for the assessment of nerve function throughout the entire body, and have become recognized as experts in the area of the spine and nervous system. Doctors of Chiropractic in the United States receive more total hours of education and training in the sciences than medical doctors (with the exception of pharmacology and surgery which Chiropractors do not use).

Once the main complaint has been alleviated, anyone would be wise to continue with occasional Chiropractic adjustments to help ensure the normalization of nerve supply to every area of the body. Most people should get adjusted at least once every month, but no one should go more than three months without spinal corrections.
